Contemplating perception and representation with two titans of photorealism 
This publication brings together for the first time the work of New York-based artist Vija Celmins (born 1938) and Colgone-based painter Gerhard Richter (born 1932) in a transatlantic dialogue that reveals surprising connections. Their works have been paired together at the Hamburger Kunsthalle in an exhibition spanning over 60 paintings, drawings, prints and objects. This study offers comparisons between some of the artists' most notable works, including Celmins' To Fix the Image in Memory and Richter's Seascape (Sea Sea). In addition to their thematic similarities and the fact that both have worked with photographic models throughout their careers, Celmins and Richter share an interest in the most elementary conditions of representation. This revelatory pairing invokes questions of reality, visibility and the nature of perception itself.

This monograph surveys the diverse oeuvre of the ever-popular German artist Imi Knoebel, whose adventures in the elementary functions of form and color seem more relevant than ever. Opening up new perspectives on selected phases of Knoebel's career, and tackling many lesser-known explorations alongside his classic geometric/minimalistic fiberboard paintings, it examines, in chronological order, the artist's time at the Darmstadt Werkkunstschule and the Düsseldorf Art Academy, where he studied with Joseph Beuys, and where he met one of the artists with whom he would become most closely associated, Blinky Palermo. Also addressed here is Knoebel's relationship to American Minimalism, and his early explorations of serial light photography and printmaking. This volume focuses on these early activities and recent paintings from the 1990s to 2009.

Few have done more to revolutionize contemporary painting than Gerhard Richter (born 1932). Amazingly--given the German artist's fame and influence--his only film remains largely unknown to this day. Made in 1966, Volker Bradke focuses on a young denizen of the Düsseldorf art scene. It was first exhibited that same year along with a painted portrait and photographs (since lost), at the legendary Schmela Gallery in Düsseldorf. A virtually unknown figure outside of his small circle, Bradke was briefly catapulted by this film into the realm of art celebrity, before fading once more into relative obscurity. This publication, which includes a DVD and essay by art historian Hubertus Butin, is the first to present this film, analyzing it in its original cultural context, and situating it within the artist's oeuvre.

Gerhard Richter’s unique pieces in seriesAt first glance, the phrase »unique pieces in series« seems to be a contradiction in terms. How can something that supposedly exists only once be present several times? Yet, some of Gerhard Richter's editions embody this particular principle of uniqueness in series. In painting editions, photographic works, prints, drawings and multiples, Richter developed a way of varying individual pieces within their respective identical production method. An entire edition thus consists of unique variants that are deliberately different. There is probably no other artist who applied this creative concept in such a fascinatingly diverse way as a fundamental method within their art.
