How can we go from being just good to being great? In his latest talk, author and speaker Hank Smith answers this question. He quotes Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin, who said, "Kindness is the essence of greatness . . . Who can tell what far-reaching impact we can have if we are only kind?" With his engaging stories, trademark humor, and illuminating quotes from the Brethren, Hank Smith teaches how simple kindness can change who we are and how we bless those around us. Brother Smith says, "If you are building others, you are building the Kingdom of God. It's as quick as turning to the person next to you and giving them a genuine compliment."
 Brother Smith asks why it is that we are kind to our friends and even to strangers but are often unkind to our own family members. Encouraging us to be kind to ourselves, he quotes President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, who said, "[You must] learn to see yourself as [your] Heavenly Father sees you—as his precious daughter or son with divine potential" and, "You are endlessly compassionate and patient with the weaknesses of others. Please remember also to be compassionate and patient with yourself." Brother Smith says that kindness is a key to happiness and will take us from goodness to greatness.

Essence of Greatness

Hank Smith says we all face challenges: "If you don t have difficult circumstances in your life, you just haven't lived long enough." In this inspiring new talk, Hank relates three stories—one from history, one from the scriptures, and one from the present—of individuals who have "unconquerable spirits", people who have experienced extreme difficulties in their lives but have still managed to overcome. The first story is of Earnest Shackleton, a British explorer who wanted to be the first man to lead a dogsled team across Antarctica. When their ship, Endurance, became caught in an ice pack and was slowly crushed by the shifting ice, the expedition faced tremendous hardships and almost certain death. Shackleton's daring and near impossible plan to save his men is seen today as one of the most incredible survival stories of all time. In the second story, Hank shares valuable insights from the example of Joseph of Egypt, who used adversity to ultimately bless his life as well as his family. Hank's third story is about his good friend Meg Johnson, who was paralyzed after falling off a cliff in southern Utah but has shown what can happen when you don't let the difficulties of life define who you are or what you can accomplish. Unconquerable will inspire you to do your best no matter what life throws at you.

The Book of Mormon tells us that when Christ appeared in the Americas after His Resurrection, He interacted with the people one by one. Using scriptures, personal experiences, and illuminating stories collected from others, Hank Smith teaches that not only does the Savior minister to us one by one, but He also knows us individually. Hank says that often the evidence of His love is found in tender mercies—"very personal and individualized blessings from the Lord," as Elder David A. Bednar calls them that we experience as we go through life. Comparing tender mercies to cairns along a trail, Hank says that they might not necessarily make the trail easier, but they give us a little bit of reassurance that we're on the right track. He teaches that as we learn to watch for the signs, we will see unmistakable evidence that our "one-by-one Savior" knows us and wants to bless us on our journey. Hank says, "The Atonement of Jesus Christ was a personal, intimate experience. He knows you. More than that, He knows how to help you if you come to Him in faith."

"But," he says, "they almost always tell me something like this: 'You know, it has really turned out to be a blessing.'"
