Veramente encompasses Italian photographer Guido Guidi's entire oeuvre, bringing together excerpts of his series from 1959 to the present day to illuminate the distinctive photographic language he has forged over a 40-year career. Guidi, a pioneer of new Italian landscape photography, was influenced by architectural history, neorealist Italian film, and conceptual art. Using photography as a process and an experience of understanding, Guidi's body of work frames a visual discourse that revolves around what it means to see, or what it may mean to offer up an image. Veramente is published to accompany a touring exhibition of the same name opening at the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson in January 2014, and then moving to Huis Marseille Museum voor Fotografie, Amsterdam in June and the Museo d'Arte della Città, Ravenna in October. Guido Guidi was born in Cesena, Italy, in 1941. He studied in Venice at the University Institute of Architecture (now IUAV), where he followed the courses of Bruno Zevi, Carlo Scarpa and Mario De Luigi, and at the Advanced Course in Industrial Design with Italo Zannier and Luigi Veronesi.

These three volumes encompass the complete evolution of the work of the renowned Italian photographer, Guido Guidi. Made in Sardinia on two trips separated by forty years, the two books not only mark the stylistic development in the work of Guidi but also the historical shifts and changes on the remote island. The first trip was on Guidi's honeymoon in 1974, and with a Nikon F and a FIAT 127 he made a series of black and white photographs which reflect the social and political climate of Sardinia in the post-sixties era. The second visit, in 2011, involved 3 cameras - a Hasselblad, a Deardorff 8x10 and a digital Canon - and the now well-known Guidi palette of tender, almost resigned colour.

"A project composed across several decades, Guido Guidi's Lunario takes the name of a traditional farmer’s almanac to bring together several strands of work all relating to the moon. Distortion, experimentation and illusion inform Guidi’s earlier work of the late 1960s and early 1970s, further developed by the introduction of a fish-eye lens. The moon’s physical form echoes throughout the works: in a woman’s face, or a child’s playing ball caught between light and shadow. Guidi’s barren, lunar landscapes give way in the 1980s to colour photographs, all of which culminate in the dramatic partial solar-eclipse of August 11, 1999. Throughout Lunario, Guido Guidi comes back to the moon as a source of stylistic and thematic inspiration: a symbol of melancholy and madness, changeability and a constant reminder of the transience of everyday life."

Pour la plupart inédites, ces images forment un lien idéal entre deux phases du travail de Guidi déjà bien connues. Après les instantanés irrévérencieux en noir et blanc du début des années 1970, cette série marque le virage progressif de Guidi vers le travail des couleurs qu'il a commencé à étudier au début des années 1980 avec une caméra grand format 8x10. Nous voyons déjà ici la fascination croissante du photographe pour son paysage quotidien, y compris les bâtiments vernaculaires, les gens ordinaires et les accidents visuels, mais pris avec un œil vif et péripatéticien qui interroge la possibilité de saisir le flux de l'expérience et la notion de temps photographique. "Tra l'altro" - qui se traduit par ailleurs, soit dit en passant, ou entre autres - agit comme un moment historique de transition dans la pensée visuelle de Guidi, mais aussi, selon ses propres mots, comme des "observations passagères" et un moyen de «prendre contact» avec le monde extérieur.
