A lo largo de estas paginas y bajo el formato de un diccionario selectivo de terminos queremos identificar una nueva voluntad arquitectonica. Una voluntad basada en un cambio profundo de miradas, criterios, instrumentos, conceptos y actitudes que une hoy, entre si, inquietudes compartidas y objetivos comunes producidos mas alla del contexto, en diversos espacios culturales. Quiere abordar sin remoras ni complejos, sin predeterminaciones ni formulas establecidas, con desinhibicion, pero tambien con energia y precision, aquellas parcelas clave que definen la propia realidad contemporanea. En este sentido, se ha decidido definir aquellos terminos susceptibles de reflejar el ambito, las caracteristicas y las repercusiones de dicha arquitectura avanzada en base a un diccionario selectivo: una arquitectura inscrita en la sociedad de la informacion e influida por las nuevas tecnologias, la nueva economia, la atencion por el medio ambiente, el interes hacia el individuo... La pluralidad de los autores y de las aportaciones especiales debe considerarse como una decision inicial destinada a favorecer el cruce y la complicidad de visiones y apuestas en esta direccion.

Description: HiperCatalunya analyzes every component of a territory, using Catalonia as a case study but saying as much or more about the entire world. Part one of this dynamically-designed two-volume set (which holds together magnetically) takes a statistical approach to territorial research. Bursting with inventive charts and graphics, it makes use of statistics on population, climate, gross national product, surface area, flora and fauna, economic fluctuation, airplane flights in vs. flights out, transportation infrastructure, construction, energy resources, energy consumption, student migration, libraries per capita, etc., to compare the facts of Catalonia to those of territories around the world, from Djakarta to Chicago to Finland. Variables are cross-referenced with others to form suggestive connections between, for instance, education and cultural consumption. Part two takes an architectural and urban planning tack, inviting a world of innovative designers to propose projects and strategies, specifically for application in Catalonia, but with obvious relevance to anywhere and everywhere. Participants include Actar Arquitectura, FOA, Xaveer de Geyter, Abalos &amp; Herreros, MVRDV, NL Architects, NO.mad Arquitectura, Javier Peia, Roche &amp; Sie..., UN Studio, and West 8, among others. Proposed scenarios consider such issues as senior tourism, sport cities, university campuses, industrial parks, airports, and suburbia.

Vicente Guallart, pioneer of new media in architecture, examines the technological, social and cultural changes inherent in our information society for fresh ways of building in the city. Presenting the last 15 years of his work, this book investigates architecture s ability to construct systems for habitable environments in diverse environmental, social and economic conditions. His collaborations with specialists in geology, anthropology, sociology, engineering, economy, software and interface design have blurred traditional boundaries. The projects follow a "natural" logic, referring to components originating in nature, as well as to environmental systems. A logic that connects nature with the transformations of urban spaces, social organizations, and the digital world.

GEOLOGICS

Sociopolis is a project for the building of a city neighbourhood of public housing in the 21st century. Under the direction of Vicente Guallart, thirteen international architects (Toyo Ito, MVRDV, FOA, François Roche, etc.) propose schemes for the construction of a neighborhood in the city of Valencia, schemes in which a new relationship is posited with the farming and natural environment, thus creating the conditions for a new shared habitat.

Created for students and professionals to inspire changes in how new buildings are designed and constructed, the Self-Sufficient competition challenged participants to design a self-sufficient and ecologically oriented dwelling. In the early 20th century, the concept of "dwelling" was defined as a "machine for living", a reference to a new way of understanding the construction of inhabitable spaces that characterized the Machine Age. Today, a century later, we face the challenge of constructing a sustainable or self-sufficient dwelling, a living organism that interacts with its environment, exchanging resources, and which functions as an entirely independent entity. The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) has collected a selection of entries presented during its 1st Advanced Architecture Contest: Self-Sufficient Housing.
