A selection from the two most important collectors of Chinese contemporary art is highlighted in the collector s section. This issue includes an essay in which Agnieszka Holland reflects on the influence of photography in her life. Korean artist Bohnchang Koo contributes with a text about the development of photographic production in his country over the last decades, and the American poet, Robert Pinsky, writes about snapshot photography. The sections, Scope and Portfolio feature works by Francois- Marie Banier, Lea Crespi and Andreas Gefeller amongst others. A special section dedicated to the emblematic North American photographer, Francesca Woodman, includes several works published here for the first time. Vladimir Tatlin’s (1885–1953) world famous monument design for the III International dating back to 1919 is considered an icon of Russian constructivism. All the demands made of revolutionary design as employed by Soviet cultural propaganda were taken to an extreme in this Utopian design. Tatlin’s monument was designed to be 400 meters tall, making it one hundred meters taller than the Eiffel Tower. It stood for the belief in a new architecture with its playful ignorance of constructive logic. But could Tatlin’s monument be built today, could it have been built in 1920? Students at the Institute of Architecture of the Vienna University of Applied Arts carefully explored the constructive circumstances before they finally subjected the monument itself to a close examination. Model photos taken in 1920 were three dimensionally reconstructed with the help of the University’s geometry department. The answers to the key questions won’t be revealed here, but: they were found and are shown in the book in an engaging and exciting manner.

Inchoate considers the educational process, looking primarily at the first year design course, at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, or ETH, in Zurich. This book endeavours to identify terms and standards defining qualities in architectural lighting. It uses this identification to promote communication and aid dialogue between designers and engineers, building owners and planners, professionals and laymen. Its 21 chapters are arranged in three sections covering the actual qualities of light, the relationship between light and space and, finally, the dimension of light in relation to culture. In each chapter, paired terms explore the design dimensions of light. Using texts, photos, computer graphics and drawings, the team of authors investigates each pair of terms. They begin with the original cultural and historical context, move onto didactic material on perception, lighting design and lighting technology and conclude with case studies in virtual architectural situations.

In The Pleasure of Beholding, Eulaia Bosch proposes to look "aloud" at art and the experience of visiting a museum. Drawing both from the history of aesthetics and from her own empirical experience as a museum curator and teacher, Bosch leads her readers through a series of mediations on the questions that we ask ourselves -- implicitly and explicitly -- when we behold a work of art. The questions she articulates range from philosophical inquiries into the nature of creativity and perception to paradoxical encounters with particular art works as well as museum installations. "Why, " she asks, for example, "is it so difficult to keep our eyes on a morally intolerable image? Why is it so easy to keep our eyes on an image that carries an implicit message of well-being?" And in a wonderful chapter on children's experience of art and museums entitled "Contemporary Art is Also for Contemporary People, " she calls into question assumptions about how young people look at art and encourages parents andeducators to engage children's natural curiosity: "Children can leave questions unanswered for a longer time than adults can without feeling awkward, " as she remarks. Throughout the book, in thoughtful, jargon-free prose, Bosch moves freely from ancient tribal statues to Van Eyck paintings to contemporary performance pieces in choosing her examples, all the while asking us to think through some of the big questions about art and life along with her. This is one of those rare books that engages both the everyday museum-goer and the serious art student and museum professional.

The chosen graphic material consists of thirty drawings and plans (sketches, ground plans, sections, elevations, details), as well as photographs from the house's construction, an aerial photograph of the site, and many other images of the finished work.
