Originally, Solomon R. Guggenheim donated works from his collection to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, which he began in 1937 to support and promote non-objective art. Then, in 1939, he established the Museum of Non-Objective Painting, which was renamed the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 1952, and its signature Frank Lloyd Wright building opened on New York's Fifth Avenue in 1959. Over time, the Guggenheim has expanded the type of art that it exhibits and collects through the addition of other great collections--notably, those of Karl Nierendorf, Peggy Guggenheim, Justin and Hilde Thannhauser, and Giuseppe Panza di Biumo--as well as through opportunities that resulted from the institution's increasingly international focus in more recent decades. "Fundamentally, my works are almost always in the nature of a proposal," Thomas Schtte contends, while conceding that "nonetheless, mostly they exist in the form of models." Schtte's notion of models is, consequently, encompassing and complex: at its core lies hypothesis and speculation. This new monograph explores in detail the vast scope of work by this renowned mid-career German artist by documenting a tripartite, eighteen-month exhibition at the Dia Center for the Arts which in effect constitutes a retrospective overview of the artist's oeuvre. Devised in three segments with distinct points of reference, this unusually extended presentation revealed the extraordinary inventiveness and diversity of Schtte's production. Scenewright, the first installment, from September 1998 through January 1999, focuses on issues relating to scenography and theater. Gloria in Memoria, from February through June 1999, explores memorials, monuments, and antiheroes, and includes works ranging from installations and sculpture to drawing. The third and final phase, In Medias Res, from September 1999 through June 2000, concentrated on recent ceramics, shown together with a new series of related monumental steel sculptures. The accompanying catalogue follows the same format as the exhibition, with essays by Dia curator and renowned art scholar Lynne Cooke as well as acclaimed poet and critic Susan Stewart.

Blinky Palermo began his last work, To the People of New York City, in 1976 in his studio in D sseldorf, completing it in January 1977, shortly before he left for the Maldive Islands, where he died. It is composed of 15 parts configured from 40 aluminum panels with acrylic in bars and blocks of cadmium yellow, cadmium red and black. A sketchbook documents the development of the panels' composition. Since this artwork is dedicated to the people of New York City and very few publications on the artist exist in English, this volume provides a key representation of the artist's work. This final artwork, in particular, has never before been published in English. Accompanying texts examine the relationship of Palermo's work to his generation of German and American artists and provide a critical, art historical context in which to consider his oeuvre. To the People of New York City is on permanent display at the Dia Foundation's site in Beacon, New York.
