Les successeurs d'Aby Warburg (1866-1929), l'éminent fondateur de  l'Institut qui porte son nom, envisagèrent pendant des décennies  de publier les très nombreux documents laissés par celui-ci à sa  mort ; sans succès, tant ce projet était ambitieux et en partie  irréalisable. L'historien de l'art E. H. Gombrich, sollicité pour  mettre ces documents en ordre, prit le parti de les trier afin de  faire ressortir la trajectoire intellectuelle d'Aby Warburg.  C'est le sujet de cette biographie singulière, fruit de  nombreuses années de décryptage et de sélection, où ne sont cités  que des fragments pertinents des archives de Warburg à l'appui du  récit rigoureux et lumineux de Gombrich.
