This new edition of Kodachrome is published as a facsimile of the original, adopting the original design, text layout and image sequence, but using new image files scanned from Ghirri's original film to take advantage of modern technology and printing methods. A small booklet is included with an essay by Francesco Zanot, which offers a contemporary perspective on the historical impact of Kodachrome, alongside French and German translations of the original texts from the book (which were published in English and Italian). 'The daily encounter with reality, the fictions, the surrogates, the ambiguous, poetic or alienating aspects, all seem to preclude any way out of the labyrinth, the walls of which are ever more illusory... to the point at which we might merge with them... He was published and exhibited extensively both in Italy and internationally and was at the height of his career at the time of his death in 1992.

À partir de 1970, Luigi Ghirri a parcouru les maisons, les rues, les places et les banlieues de sa ville adoptive de Modène et a construit un ensemble d'œuvres anciennes qui contiennent des panneaux indiquant de nombreuses directions que sa pratique allait prendre par la suite. La plupart du temps, il travaillait à Modène, ne voyageant qu'occasionnellement plus loin sur les plages de Rimini sur l'Adriatique ou les lacs suisses. Il a commencé à tracer des projets et des thèmes - certains regroupés spécifiquement autour d'un sujet, d'autres réunis autour d'un principe d'organisation plus poétique. L’un de ces derniers était Colazione sull’Erba (Petit-déjeuner sur l’herbe) dans lequel il a acheté ensemble des photographies réalisées entre 1972 et 1974 dans la périphérie de Modène qu’il déclare «avoir visité de manière ironique et anxieuse». Son objectif était la jonction de la nature et de l'artifice dans l'environnement créé par l'homme; les symétries des cyprès, les pelouses bien entretenues, la touche personnalisée des plantes en pots, palmiers et cactus avec leur promesse d'ailleurs. Sur le modèle de Kodachrome, le pâle séminal de Ghirri à la photographie qu'il a auto-publié en 1978, ce volume est le premier livre d'une série planifiée qui prendra les catégories originales de Ghirri pour son propre travail comme base pour une collection élaborant l'œuvre du grand photographe.

Over the course of his short career, Ghirri would produce a vast body of photographs without parallel in the Europe of his time and numerous writings which would have an indelible impact on the history of photography. This extensive book compiled by the renowned British curator James Lingwood accompanies a touring exhibition to three major museum venues across Europe and focuses on the first decade of Ghirri’s work, defined by his 1979 exhibition in Parma.
