Discourses: Conversations in Postmodern Art and Culture (Documentary Sources in Contemporary Art)

These highly polemical discourses document the critical ideas and strategies that characterize the culture of the 1980s and record the dialectical means through which these ideas and strategies were formulated. Engaging more than 80 artists, theorists, and critics from a variety of fields, the conversations touch on numerous topics of current contention: the relationship between theory and artistic production, the role of art in the community, the meaning of postmodernism, the effects of representation on racial and sexual stereotypes, the relationship between high art and popular culture, and the responsibilities of art institutions. Among the discussants are Michel Foucault, Fredric Jameson, Edward Said, Tim Rollins, Greil Marcus, Ethyl Eichelberger, Douglas Crimp, Roland Barthes, Julia Kristeva, Gayatri Spivak and Laurie Anderson. This is the third volume in the New Museum of Contemporary Art series Documentary Sources in Contemporary Art which includes Art After Modernism: Rethinking Representation and Blasted Allegories: An Anthology of Writings by Contemporary Artists. Other publications by The New Museum include Haws Haacke: Unfinished Business, and Impresario: Malcolm McLaren and the British New Wave. Out There addresses the theme of cultural marginalization - the process whereby various groups are excluded from access to and participation in the dominant culture. It engages fundamental issues raised by attempts to define such concepts as mainstream, minority, and "other," and opens up new ways of thinking about culture and representation. All of the texts deal with questions of representation in the broadest sense, encompassing not just the visual but also the social and psychological aspects of cultural identity. Included are important theoretical writings by Homi Bhabha, Helene Cixous, Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, and Monique Wittig. Their work is juxtaposed with essays on more overtly personal themes, often autobiographical, by Gloria Anzaldua, Bell Hooks, and Richard Rodriguez, among others. This rich anthology brings together voices from many different marginalized groups - groups that are often isolated from each other as well as from the dominant culture. It joins issues of gender, race, sexual preference, and class in one forum but without imposing a false unity on the diverse cultures represented. Each piece in the book subtly changes the way every other piece is read. While several essays focus on specific issues in art, such as John Yau's piece on Wilfredo Lam in the Museum of Modern Art, or James Clifford's on collecting art, others draw from debates in literature, film, and critical theory to provide a much broader context than is usually found in work aimed at an art audience. Topics range from the functions of language to the role of public art in the city, from gay pornography to the meanings of black hair styles. Not only was Frank O'Hara (1926-1966) one of the most important American poets of his generation, he was also intimately involved with the art world of the 1950s and 1960s, a time when New York had become the cultural capital of the world. As an associate curator at the Museum of Modern Art, O'Hara organized a series of important exhibitions, notably of the work of Franz Kline and of Robert Motherwell. In Memory of My Feelings: Frank O'Hara and American Art explores this key period in modern art by presenting artists who were associated with O'Hara and whose seminal works are reflected in his poetry. Featuring over 80 works by twenty-three artists, the book focuses on works closely tied to specific poems by Frank O'Hara, notably Jasper Johns's In Memory of My Feelings—Frank O'Hara and Grace Hartigan's Oranges. Included are direct collaborations between O'Hara and various artists such as Joe Brainard, Norman Bluhm, and Larry Rivers, as well as portraits of the poet by Elaine de Kooning and Alex Katz. Franz Kline, Alice Neel, and Joan Mitchell are some of the other artists highlighted. The book is a timely re-examination of the relationship between art and poetry at this crucial moment in American art. It also offers new insights into the charismatic figure of Frank O'Hara and his world. The exhibition, In Memory of My Feelings: Frank O'Hara and American Art, will be at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, from July 11 to November 14, 1999; at The Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, Ohio, January 28 to April 16, 2000; and the Parrish Art Museum in Southampton, New York, in May, 2000.

In Memory of My Feelings: Frank O'Hara and American Art

Artist Gillian Wearing uses photography and video to produce a portrait of the complexities of contemporary life. This book takes a look at all of her work, contextualizing it in relation to 20th-century painting, photography and video art. The text discusses with the artist her collaborative approach towards her work and its subjects, and focuses on "10-16", a video installation that charts our transition from childhood to adolescence. The full transcripts of Wearing's videos are included. The book is part of a series of studies of important artists of the late-20th century. Each title offers a comprehensive survey of the artist's work, providing analyses and multiple perspectives on contemporary art and its inspiration.

Chris Burden: Streetlamps is the definitive publication on Burden’s iconic series. Chris Burden: Streetlamps explores the artist’s work with antique streetlamps, which he began to amass in the early 2000s. Burden fully restored 202 streetlamps from the 1920s to create his renowned Urban Light, which was acquired by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. He realized four more major streetlamp sculptures in both public and private spaces, all of which are lavishly documented here from conception through installation.

The binding is three stainless steel bolts that fasten the paper wrap cover and contents to a quarter inch piece of birch wood.
