The biography of Sean Lemass, who was a founder-member of Fianna Fail in 1926 and became Minister for Industry and Commerce when the party first came to power in 1932. He held this position in every Fianna Fail government until 1959. During World War II he also held the post of Minister for Supplies. When de Valera retired from active politics in 1959, Lemass succeeded him as Taoiseach. He helped prepare the country for the dismantling of the tariff system which he himself had built up in the 1930s. In 1965 he negotiated the Anglo-Irish Trade Agreement as well as making his celebrated visit to Belfast to see Terence O'Neill, the Prime Minister of Northern Ireland. He retired as Taoiseach in 1966 and from public life three years later. Other books by the author include "Chairman or Chief?". Leadership and Responsibility in the Second World War examines how well political, diplomatic, and military leaders, particularly in Great Britain, handled the daunting challenge of a worldwide conflagration. It seeks to determine if a connection can be delineated between leadership, responsibility, success, and failure - specifically if any connection can be found between reluctance to shoulder responsibility and failure to produce results. In doing so, the authors challenge widely accepted views on major wartime controversies, such as the role of Neville Chamberlain and his Conservative party at the outbreak of the war, the reasons the British failed to reach an alliance with the Soviet Union in 1939, and the motives that drove Claus von Stauffenberg to attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler.

When Imperial Japan unleashed the Pacific War in December 1941, Australian forces went into action, as part of a larger British Empire force, to defend Malaya and Singapore. Australia's principal contribution to defending Malaya and Singapore was the 8th Division. Originally raised for service in the Mediterranean, the division was committed piecemeal to Malaya and its performance was bedevilled by poor command decisions in the face of an enemy better prepared on all counts for the campaign at hand. The 8th Division, however, also reflected some strengths of the AIF at large: stubbornness in positional defense, effective and flexible small unit tactics and leadership, and skill and determination in close quarter combat. Singapore was lost more in spite than because of Australian efforts, but its loss underlined Australia's strategic dependence on 'great and powerful friends' during the Second World War.
