Although commonly known to the layman as a technique that can affect the physical world, bring wealth, and even add to one's IQ, autosuggestion is actually a technique intended to complement the use of medicine. It was developed by apothecary Emile Coué from the late 1800's to the early 1900's. In 1932, German psychiatrist Johannes Schultz developed and published autogenic training, a relaxation technique influenced by the Coué method. The Coué method centers on a routine repetition of a particular expression according to a specified ritual in a given physical state at the beginning and at the end of each day. Against the belief that a strong conscious will constitutes the best path to success, Coué maintained that curing some of our troubles requires a change in our subconscious/unconscious thought, which can only be achieved by using our imagination. Although stressing that he was not primarily a healer but one who taught others to heal themselves, Coué claimed to have effected organic changes through autosuggestion.

Originally published in 1922, Self Mastery Through Conscious Autosuggestion caused a stir throughout the scientific and religious communities. Émile Coué's assertions that the repetition of certain phrases, or mantras, can have a positive effect on the health and happiness of an individual challenged the existing reliance on chemicals and clergy. However, his theories, which are laid out in straightforward detail in his work, were solidly based on his firsthand experiences with patients, including such stalwart methods as conditioning therapy and the placebo effect. Often invited to lecture on the subject, he finally was motivated to commit it to writing by his desire to help people help themselves. French pharmacist and psychotherapist EMILE COUE (1857-1926) founded the Lorraine Society of Applied Psychology and was known across Europe and the U.S. for his theories on the power of autosuggestion, which was dubbed the "Coué Method" and is still practiced today.

Suggestion, or rather Autosuggestion, is quite a new subject, and yet at the same time it is as old as the world. It is new in the sense that until now it has been wrongly studied and in consequence wrongly understood; it is old because it dates from the appearance of man on the earth. In fact autosuggestion is an instrument that we possess at birth, and in this instrument, or rather in this force, resides a marvelous and incalculable power, which according to circumstances produces the best or the worst results. Knowledge of this force is useful to each one of us, but it is peculiarly indispensable to doctors, magistrates, lawyers, and to those engaged in the work of education. By knowing how to practise it consciously it is possible in the first place to avoid provoking in others bad autosuggestions which may have disastrous consequences, and secondly, consciously to provoke good ones instead, thus bringing physical health to the sick, and moral health to the neurotic and the erring, the unconscious victims of anterior autosuggestions, and to guide into the right path those who had a tendency to take the wrong one
