This important little book contains an account of the evolution of surgical instruments as illustrated by examples formerly in the museum of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. With Dr. Thompson as curator, this collection had grown to number about three thousand examples when early in 1941 a Nazi air raid destroyed a major portion of it. Dr. Thompson, from his intimate knowledge of the contents of the collection, has compiled this record. He traces the scapel from 330 B.C. up to the present time. The amputation knife from Susruta to Liston; and the story of the saw in 2700 B.C. The period from Trepan to Trephine covers almost two thousand years. Originally published in 1941, this book has become hard to find. Specialists currently ask circa $250 for the title. Special effort has been made to reproduce the illustrations contained in the original edition.

Durer, Albrecht (1471-1528), German painter, printmaker, draughtsman and art theorist, is generally regarded as the greatest German Renaissance artist. His vast body of work includes alterpieces and religious works, numerous portraits and self-portraits, and copper engravings. His woodcuts, such as the Apocalypse series (1498), retain a more Gothic flavour than the rest of his work.  Born in Nurnberg as the third son of the Hungarian goldsmith,  Albrecht Durer began as an apprentice to his father in 1485, but his earliest known work, one of his many self portraits, was made in 1484. "Negro Workaday Songs" is the third volume of a series of folk background studies of which "The Negro and His Song" was the first and "Folk-Beliefs of the Southern Negro" was the second. So far as Odum was aware, none of the songs in this collection had been published and the songs were all sung or repeated by actual Black workers or singers and much of their value lies in the exact transcription of natural lines, words and mixtures. Odum intended his study of Black music as a series of pictures of the Black American as portrayed through his workaday songs. He has taken the position that these workaday songs, crude and fragmentary, and often having only local or individual significance, provide a more accurate picture of Negro working life than do conventional folk songs. Odum's book is also an important contribution to the history of the blues in America and a collector's item in that field.

A Study of Chinese Alchemy

Reprint of original 1928 edition. 156p. In China as elsewhere, alchemy is a doctrine aiming to afford an understanding of the principles underlying the formation and functioning of the cosmos. The alchemist overcomes the limits of individuality, and ascends to higher states of being; he becomes, in Chinese terms, a zhenren or Authentic Man. Chinese alchemy went through a complex and not yet entirely understood development along its twenty centuries of documented history. The two main traditions are conventionally known as waidan or "external alchemy" and neidan or "internal alchemy". The bulk of the Chinese alchemical sources is found in the Daozang (Taoist Canon), the largest collection of Taoist texts. The cosmos as we know it is conceived of as the final stage in a series of spontaneous transmutations stemming from original non-existence. This process entails the apparent separation of primeval Unity into the two complementary principles, yin and yang. Their re-union generates the cosmos. When the process is completed, the cosmos is subject to the laws of cosmology. The alchemist's task is to retrace this process backwards. Alchemy, whether "external" or "internal," providessupport to the adept, leading one to the point when, as some texts put it, "Heaven spontaneously reveals its secrets." Its practice must be performed under the close supervision of a master, who provides the "oral instructions" (koujue) necessary to an understanding of the processes that the adept performs with minerals and metals, or undergoes within himself. Modern study of the alchemical literature began in the present century, after the Canon was reprinted and made widely available in 1926. Johnson's work, originally published in 1928, remains one of the full book length treatises in English on the subject.
