Born in Snow Hill, in 1869, William J. Edwards graduated in 1893 from Tuskegee Institute, then under the direction of Booker T. Washington, and set out to find a way to use in his own life the values he had learned at Tuskeegee. He did not have to look far. Edwards toured Wilcox, Monroe, Butler, and Dallas counties and found a large black population in need of both liberal and practical education. Following the model set by Tuskegee, Edwards founded Snow Hill Institute in 1893 and was its principal and guiding hand for 31 years.Twenty-Five Years in the Black Belt is a memoir written by Edwards in 1918, when the school was 25 years old. It not only provided a fascinating portrait of the conditions of black people and the state of race relations in Alabama at the time, but also tells of one person's determination to uplift his race, particularly through eductation, in the years following Reconstruction.

William James Edwards (1869-1950) was born in Snow Hill, Alabama, the son of former slaves. Aged 20, he walked 100 miles from his home to the Tuskegee Institute, where he graduated in 1893. He became a prominent educator, founded the Snow Hill Institute and was its principal for 31 years. In his autobiography, Twenty-Five Years in the Black Belt (1918), Edwards describes his childhood battles with poverty and illness, and discusses social and economic problems in the South, and the challenges African Americans faced in the early twentieth century.

In bringing this book before the public, it is my hope that the friends of the Snow Hill School and all who are interested in Negro Education may become more familiar with the problems and difficulties that confront those who labor for the future of a race.  I have had to endure endless hardships during these twenty-five years, in order that thousands of poor negro youths might receive an industrial education, - boys and girls who might have gone into that demoralized class that is a disgrace to any people and that these friends may continue their interest in not only Snow Hill but all the schools of the South that are seeking to make better citizens of our people.  I also hope that the interest may be sustained until the State and Nation realize that it is profitable to educate the black child as well as the white.         To me, these have been twenty-five years of self denial, of self sacrifice, of deprivation, even of suffering, but when I think of the results, I am still encouraged to go on; when I think of the work that Mr. McDuffie is doing at Laurinburg, N. C., Brown at Richmond, Ala., Knight at Evergreen, Ala., Mitchell at W. Butler, Ala., Carmichael at Perdue Hill, Ala., Brister at Selma, Ala., and hundreds of others, I feel that the sacrifice has not been in vain, so I continue believing that after all the great heart of the American people is on the right side. I think that today, the Negro faces the dawn, - not the twilight, - the morning, - not the evening.

<p>DiCesare's view of life was forever changed by a series of horrifying events in and around his dorm room: C2D1 of Erie Hall. From early February through late April of 1985, he and his college friends would endure what is now called The C2D1 Haunting. Apparitions sighted, strange voices heard, moving objects witnessed and physical attacks all became part of the ordeal shared by Chris - who quickly became the focal point of the haunting.
