The majority of texts written about Avner Ben-Gal focus on his nationality. The majority of his paintings from the early 2000s include graphic, violent imagery. Ben-Gal's recent work, however, has evolved beyond the political and religious challenges of the Middle East to convey the more oblique foreboding of contemporary society, with all of its attendant horrors, both perceived and actual. Employing a muted palette, he paints landscapes of non-specific places-those from a dream or a novel or an overheard rumor-and his compositions include blurred figures or solitary vegetation. Although his spaces are bleak and charged with emotion, they are neither prescriptive nor didactic. The works are a more universal reflection on our collective current life-a life that, although at times desolate, is punctuated by intense beauty.The Aspen Art Museum presents Avner Ben-Gal in his first one-person museum exhibition.

Since the late 1980s, Catherine Opie's interest in the motif of the visual road trip has resulted in photographs that sumultaneously document and question the self-constructed identities of the people and places that characterize America. From the freeways of Los Angeles to the downtown of St. Louis and the Wall Street district of New York, Opie now turns her camera to the skyways and icehouses of the Twin Cities. The culmination of a year-long commission from the Walker Art Center, Skyways and Icehouses provides a meditative portrait of a locale, at once a straight-forward documentation and an inquiring social psycho-geography, an exploration of those symbolic architectures often taken for granted. Personal anecdotes, memories, and stories fron Minnesota residents animate Opie's haunting landscapes. Introduction by Douglas Fogle. AUTHOR BIO: Catherine Opie was born in Ohio. In the past few years, her work has been the subject of one-person shows at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, the St. Louis Art Museum, and the Photographer's Gallery, London. Opie teaches photography at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she currently lives.

The installation featured a full-scale reproduction of the interior spaces from the home in which Edmier grew up in Tinley Park, a suburb of Chicago.
