Originally published in Germany in 1989 to critical acclaim, Famouz established the reputation of Anton Corbijn as the photographer who redefined the genre of music photography. With its over 100 provocative black-and-white photographs, Famouz offers more than mere documentary registration of the music icons of the 1970s and 1980s. Anton Corbijn’s "firstborn child" Famouz, our own publication launched in 1989, really sparked things off. All of a sudden, the photographer, who had long been a nominee for success behind the scenes of the pop world and record industry, entered the limelight. His portraits of rock and pop idols had a completely different, completely novel slant: they were pensive, melancholic, more personal, galaxies away from the world of showbiz, glamour and image makers. Corbijn is now famous all over the world. His photographs, which led to a new era of music photography, are on display at international exhibitions. Control: The Ian Curtis Film biopic is Anton Corbijn's most recent project and, in some way, the culmination of the multi-talented artist's work: Corbijn is directing a film about Ian Curtis (1956-1980), lead singer of the legendary post-punk rock band Joy Division, and publishing a book about the making of the film. The film details the troubled life of Ian Curtis, vocalist, lyricist and guitarist of the band Joy Division. His songs filled with emotional pain, violence, and alienation, his eerie baritone voice, and his unique dancing style reminiscent of the epileptic seizures he experienced made him a hero of the post-punk era; his suicide at the age of 23 on the eve of Joy Division's first US tour confirmed the myth of the rock star dying young. The book is a visual diary, with hand-written notations, drawings, and a wealth of photographs. It details the creative process from pre-production through filming to post-production and first screenings.

Anton Corbijn's new feature film is a suspense thriller titled The American, starring George Clooney. Its world-wide release is scheduled for fall 2010. Based on Martin Booth's 1992 novel A Very Private Gentleman, the movie is set in Sweden and in the Abruzzo region of Italy. The protagonist is a gunsmith and sometime hitman who tries to change his life, only to find out the hard way that you can t undo the past. Not one to give up on his old life, director-cumphotographer Anton Corbijn daily took his stillcamera to the set, and this book is the proof of that. Filled with candid on- and off set photographs accompanied by Corbijn s diary style writing, it provides a unique insight into the making of The American.
