Missoula began in 1860 as Hellgate Village, a trading post located about 4 miles west of what is now downtown. In 1864, the construction of a mill powered by water diverted from Rattlesnake Creek drew residents of Hellgate to the new town, and the arrival of the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1883 assured Missoula's future. The establishment of the University of Montana led to growth on the south side of the Clark Fork River, and the timber industry drove the economy. Missoula has evolved into a trade, medical, educational, and governmental center of western Montana.

Situated in a broad valley with three rivers―the Clark Fork, the Blackfoot, and the Bitterroot―is Missoula, the second largest city in Montana. The city is the hub of commercial, governmental, educational, recreational, cultural, and health resources in the western Montana region. Missoula was originally founded in 1860 as Hellgate Village, four miles west of present-day Missoula on the current Mullan Road. The original founders moved to the present site, what is now downtown Missoula on the Clark Fork River, built a mill (1864–1865), and called the site Missoula Mills. This mill, along with the arrival of the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1883, the establishment of the state university in 1893, and the growth of the timber industry, enabled the town to grow on both sides of the Clark Fork River. Through photographs, Images of America: Missoula follows the growth of Missoula into the city it is today, with a population of over 60,000.

The Klondike Gold Rush spawned the railroad in 1898. The line was built to alleviate the hardships of the gruesome trip over the passes to the gold fields in the interior of the Yukon. By the time the railroad was completed in the summer of 1900 the rush was over, but the White Pass Route survived nevertheless, and continued for 82 years to provide a vital link between the Yukon and the outside world.

Situated at the head of Lynn Canal are two sites of much importance to the history of the Kondike Gold Rush, one of the greatest adventures North America has known. At the mounth of the Taiya River is the abandoned site of Dyea, once the gateway to the Chilkoot Trail and the water route to the interior of the Yukon. Four miles to the southeast of Dyea, at the mouth of the Skagway River, lies the other major gateway to the goldfields by way of the White Pass Trail--Skagway. The early history of these two towns in interrelated but today they are vastly different. Dyea has gone the way of the gold rush towns of the late 2800s and early 1900s--it has crumbled to the dust from which it sprang in 1897. Skagway has fared better, and along with Dawson City and a few other remains, it represents the last vestiges of the gold rush.
