In addition to art colony founders and the academically- trained artists who joined them, the book includes later arrivals, such as modernists Andrew Dasburg, John Marin, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Dorothy Brett, who followed Mabel Dodge Luhan to Taos. This is an essential reference work for scholars and collectors of New Mexico art.

Journey Without End: The Life and Art of Lawrence Calcagno

Lawrence Calcagno (1913-93) was a painter of the San Francisco school of Abstract Expressionism, and, as described by Gerald Nordland, "a proud, self-reliant, and independent figure in postwar American art." He taught at a number of schools and universities, received many invitations for residencies and guest professorships, and had two major retrospective exhibitions in his lifetime, yet his work fell out of favor for a time. The acclaim he hoped for, and deserved, is materializing for the most part posthumously. Nordland says that "his best work adds importantly to the achievements of his Abstract Expressionist generation; and like his peers, his work continued to grow in physical power for many years." This beautiful book surveys the work of a fifty-year career and shows Calcagno to have been an artist of depth and talent.

With the rise of train travel from the latter 1880s through the 1920s, artists flocked to the Grand Canyon and to the pueblos of New Mexico and Arizona to paint unusual landscapes and exotic Indians. Recognizing that the mystique of the Southwest Indian country might help pull them out of a financial slump, the Santa Fe Railway set out to promote vacation packages that would appeal to the luxury traveler. As part of the plan and over a number of years, the Santa Fe acquired paintings and used them in a variety of ways. On calendars and lithographs, in hotel lobbies and dining cars, the Santa Fe's paintings were displayed around the country, planting wanderlust and thirst for adventure in the hearts of would-be tourists.
