Due to recent criticisms of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and other U.S. agencies over the last several years, resulting from practices prior to the advent in forensic DNA analysis, the use of hair analysis as a comparative science has gone by the wayside. However, with advances in DNA analysis of non-anagen hairs―where there is nuclei containing cellular material attached to the telogen (resting) hair root―such recovered hairs be analyzed to determine identity, or―in cases where there is not a DNA match―to, at the very least, exclude a suspect. All hairs, whether hair root is attached or not, can ultimately be analyzed using mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analysis. Due to the costs of this latter testing method, careful analysis by laboratory personnel is required to determine which are the most important and relevant of hairs to analyze in a given case. Achieving effective forensic recovery, handling, analysis, and testing of hair evidence requires roles for the crime scene examiner through to the laboratory scientist.
