For 12 millennia, people were drawn to a water source located in the region Spanish conquistadores named the Llano Estacado, a vast plateau 3,000 feet above sea level and 300 miles long and wide. Near this site in 1890, settlers combined two fledgling communities to create the town of Lubbock. Finally incorporated in 1909 and soon promoted as the “Hub City,” Lubbock doubled its original population of 1,900 in each of its first six decades, nurturing growth through civic cooperation, small business enterprise, higher education, and health care services. Today, almost 240,000 people call Lubbock home, and the city serves as the socioeconomic center of the Llano Estacado.

4 out of 4 stars Share This Review\nIn Our Family's Story of Survival as POWs in the Philippines, the Brink siblings, Pamela J. Brink, Robert A. Brink, and John W. Brink, wrote a heartfelt non-fiction story. It is a story that shows the gruesome effect of war and the challenges the Brink family had to go through to survive. The story starts with the history of the authors' family. Their father, Myron Brink, was the son of John William Brink, a farmer in South Dakota and a protestant preacher who did not believe in education. His son, Myron, had a different view from him. He had studied and got a job to teach high school Mathematics. He moved on to different vocations and excelled greatly at them all. He had married their mother, Maude E. Rice, and their marriage was the talk of the town for many years because of the expensive diamond ring Myron had used to engage Maude.\nThey had lived a happy and comfortable life with many servants around them. The children did nothing except do their homework and play a lot of games. When world war II came, they were subjected to abject poverty, and they almost lost their lives. They lost all they had to Japanese soldiers and suffered severe illnesses. They had believed that they would be rescued early, but as days turned to weeks and months to years, prompt help wasn't forthcoming. Did they survive this horrible situation? How did they move on as a family? Find out by reading this fascinating story.\nThere are a lot of positives to the book. It was very detailed and written with minimal errors. It contained no vulgar words. Most of the books and letters referenced were written at the end of the chapters. The book was well edited. Where the ideas of the authors seemed to conflict, it was reconciled at the end of the chapters. Among the writers, Bob always gave a detailed story, except in a few cases where Pam had given a more detailed story. Bill's stories were usually simple but very interesting. The story was generally well arranged, and it was easy to understand and go along with. The love and unity that the family shared even in the midst of the serious challenges they went through is the best lesson from the story. Readers will learn a lot from their lives as a family.\nOn the negative side, the story may not really interest a reader seeking a thrill or expecting it to be suspenseful. It didn't have all of those. However, for the reader who had no initial expectations but just wanted to go in whichever direction the authors took him, the book will be such a great read. Also, it was a real-life story, and understanding that people went through such horrible experiences creates a nauseous feeling. Aside from the minor points above, the book was an interesting one.\nThe book was professionally edited. I found just one error in it, which wasn't enough to take a thing away from my enjoyment of the book. This book definitely deserves the full rating of 4 out of 4 stars because it was very detailed and properly arranged. It was written in plain English. It gave both the old and modern names of the geographical locations contained in it. I got to know a lot of places I never knew before now.\nI recommend this book to lovers of history. Catholics and activists will have a good time reading this as well. People who enjoy war stories will also enjoy this one.\n******
