Manet to Matisse: The Hillman Family Collection is a history and catalogue of one of the foremost art collections formed in America in the 1950s and 1960s. The collection is best known for its Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and early modern masters, among them Bonnard, Braque, Dufy, Gris, Manet, Matisse, Modigliani, Picasso, Pissarro, Renoir, and Rouault. The Hillman Collection also includes works by Americans of the WPA era and postwar European artists.The introductory essays document the acquisitions made by the Hillmans over three decades and analyze many of the best-known images in an art historical context. The seventy-eight paintings, sculptures, and works on paper are illustrated in color and accompanied by detailed catalogue entries with complete exhibition histories and bibliographic references. From their debut in Berlin in the 1780s to their emergence in 1930s California, Jewish women’s salons served as welcoming havens where all classes and creeds could openly debate art, music, literature, and politics. This fascinating book is the first to explore the history of these salons where remarkable women of intellect resolved that neither gender nor religion would impede their ability to bring about social change. Emily D. Bilski and Emily Braun examine the lives of more than a dozen Jewish salonières, charting the evolution of the salon over time and among cultures, in cities including Berlin, Vienna, Paris, London, New York, and Milan. They show how each woman uniquely adapted the salon to suit her own interests while maintaining the salon’s key characteristics of basic informality and a diversity of guests. Other distinguished contributors to the volume discuss in detail the Berlin salons of the 1800s; the salon in terms of Jewish acculturation and its relation to gender and music; and the relations of Marcel Proust, Oscar Wilde, and Gertrude Stein to the literary salon. This book examines the work of Mario Sironi, painter, caricaturist, designer, and muralist, whose images shaped the political myths of Italian Fascism. Providing a case study of the relationship between artistic freedom and political authoritarianism during and between the world wars in Italy, Emily Braun's study challenges traditional interpretations of this period as a 'return to order'. Recounting how Sironi fashioned the Fascist regime's image in both high and low-art forms, from propaganda in the press to monumental mural projects, Braun shows why Sironi was defended by progressive critics, and even Mussolini himself, as the consummate artist of the 'Fascist Revolution'. Umberto Boccioni was perhaps the most versatile and impassioned of the Futurists--the literary, political and artistic movement that flourished in Italy during the first half of the twentieth century, proclaiming a revolutionary, spectacular style of life. His masterwork, "Materia," a huge canvas painted during July and August of 1912, depicts the artist's mother seated on the balcony of her apartment at Via Adige, 23, in Milan. Her monumental, sculpted hands sit at the center of the painting, and behind and above her are the rooftops and factory buildings of the Piazza Trento and beyond. The Cubist energy of the composition is enhanced by an open window that reflects rays of light over her, illustrating simultaneous visual impressions of indoors and outdoors. Boccioni's Materia: A Futurist Masterpiece and the European Avant-Garde is organized around a series of themes including the artist's evolution from Divisionism to Futurism, the exchanges between Cubism and Futurism, and the relationship between Boccioni's painting and sculpture. Through an exploration of related paintings by Boccioni, as well as works by his counterparts within the greater European sphere, from Picasso to Duchamp, this exhibition and catalogue demonstrate the pivotal role Boccioni played within the history of Modernism, broadening the current perspective on the artist and, by extension, the Italian Futurism movement. Published to accompany a major retrospective exhibition--the first in the United States in more than 35 years and the most comprehensive ever mounted--this title showcases the pioneering work of Italian artist Alberto Burri (1915-95). Exploring the beauty and complexity of Burri's process-based works, the exhibition positions the artist as a central and singular protagonist of postwar art. Burri is best known for his series of Sacchi (sacks) made of stitched and patched remnants of torn burlap bags, often combined with fragments of discarded clothing. Far less familiar to American audiences are his other series, which this exhibition represents in depth: Catrami (tars), Gobbi (hunchbacks), Muffe (molds), Bianchi (whites), Legni (woods), Ferri (irons), Combustioni plastiche (plastic combustions), Cretti and Cellotex works. Burri's work both demolished and reconfigured the Western pictorial tradition, while reconceptualizing modernist collage. Using unconventional materials, he moved beyond the painted surfaces and markmaking of American Abstract Expressionism and European Art Informel. Burri's unprecedented approaches to manipulating humble substances--and his abject picture-objects--also profoundly influenced Arte Povera, Neo-Dada and Process art. Alberto Burri was born in Italy in 1915. He first garnered attention in the US in the early 1950s when his work was included in the group exhibition Younger European Painters at the Guggenheim Museum and was also shown at the Frumkin Gallery, Chicago, and at the Stable Gallery, New York. In 1977 a retrospective was presented at the University of California's Frederick S. Wight Gallery, Los Angeles, and traveled to the Marion Koogler McNay Art Institute, San Antonio, Texas, and the Guggenheim Museum (1978). He died in Nice, France, in 1995.

A pioneering study of how Picasso, Braque, and Gris engaged with the pictorial tradition of illusion and deception in their influential Cubist works\nThe age-old tradition of pictorial illusionism, known as trompe l’oeil (“deceive the eye”), employs visual tricks that confound the viewer’s perception of reality and fiction, truth and falsehood. In the interwar period art revealed itself as part of the social and ideological order. The work of art became a point of intersection for the modern, unstable and ambiguous world. Works of art produced in these decades reflect a range of discourses on power and subjectivity. They contribute to the foundation of the post-war development of aesthetic pluralism and point out the socially conditioned framings of the Fine Arts. During the last decades, research in the field of interwar art has reworked and reconceptualized existing notions on the period. This book offers four new approaches which also contribute to reflections on methodological questions regarding the changes in the discipline of Art History since the early 1970s. The articles discuss topics such as Le Corbusier's connection with the French fascist movement, the position of women in the avant-garde movement, Giorgio de Chirico's play with kitsch and avant-garde practices, and the semiotics of the surrealist image.
