Designed and built in only 15 months, the restructuring of the former Arsenale at La Maddalena in Sardinia,  was initiated with the purpose of hosting the 2009 G8 Summit, the scope of work included reclaiming and rebuilding an abandoned and contaminated site of 155 thousand square meters.  The convention centre is composed series of business and recreational buildings that transformed the area into one of the major nautical hubs of the western Mediterranean. An entirely new port was completed with infrastructure for sailing, tourism, and nautical training. This book presents this extraordinary feat, narrating the collective endeavors of the architects, engineers, developers, technicians, contractors, government officials and the over 1,600 workers that worked round the clock to complete a project dedicated to the rebirth and economic development.

Green Obsession traces the long path that architect Stefano Boeri and his studio - Stefano Boeri Architetti - have followed in the last fifteen years of practice, aiming at the redefinition of the relationship between city and nature. The book follows a discursive thread, alternating dialogues and scientific essays by some of the main protagonists who have contributed to widening the perspective on this subject, helping to raise awareness while protecting the world and its biodiversity. Cities have contributed for centuries to the promotion of some of humanity's greatest ideas, we must now urgently include them as among the principal players in the environmental debate and at the forefront of any policy tackling and countering - possibly reversing - climate change. Nevertheless, even today one of the most significant technologies capable of absorbing CO2 and restoring our environment is photosynthesis. Planting trees, in addition to protecting existing natural areas and biodiversity, together with de-carbonization, renewable energies, digitalization, smart mobility and the circular economy could be the set of strategies necessary to tackle climate change. Today the effects of the Anthropocene age are ever more visible, changing our environment and affecting every species that lives within it. Green Obsession offers a path to be taken, a hard but still necessary paradigm shift - even for architecture and urbanism - that aims to give a voice to this much needed ecological transition. Recently democracy has been the watchword for a range of disparate, yet apparently convergent contestations and negotiations within the global order. Democracy Unrealized, detailing the results of Platform1, the first of four conferences held in conjunction with Documenta 11, presents a context within which the interpretive and conceptual regimes surrounding democracy can be reargued against the claims of a neoliberal ideology. From this globalist viewpoint, democracy described as an unfinished project requires no structural changes, for it is complete in all its foundational features, requiring only small technical adjustments and minor tinkering. This is how the main Western democracies have seen themselves--at best as "incomplete implementations" of equality and justice, rather than as limited, flawed, dead-ended, and problematic. In response to this presumption, this book proceeds from the idea that realizing democracy is partly a matter of bringing to light what liberal democracy has promised but failed to deliver. The emphasis here is on the potential for revision, a reevaluation of values, and the extension and creative transformation necessary to keep in step with 21st-century globalizing processes. This is democracy as an ever open, essentially unfinishable project that in principle has fallen short of its ideals.

Born in 1934 in Naples--where he still lives and works--Mimmo Jodice has been at the top of his profession, one of the great Italian masters of photography, for more than 45 years. This volume celebrates Jodice's architectural work, uniting his portraits of eight world capitals into a kind of self-portrait. Four of the cities have been the subjects of previous titles: Paris: City of Light; Inlands: A Vision of Boston; São Paulo and La città invisibile: Nuove vedute di Napoli; and four are new to print, including Rome, Moscow, Tokyo and New York. When Jodice's Medeterranean appeared, which includes some Rome images, the architecture critic Herbert Muschamp observed of it in the New York Times that "Mr. Jodice depicts a mythical place a romantic intertwining of wholeness and solitude: the oceanic sensation of merger between a self and its surroundings." That impression of unity is as strong--if not as relaxing--in his contemporary urban landscapes as in his ancient ones.
