[This book] is a polemical investigation of that Manhattan; it documents the symbiotic relationship between its mutant metropolitan culture and the unique architecture to which it gave rise. [This book] exposes the consistency and coherence of the seemingly unrelated episodes of Manhattan's urbanism; it is an interpretation that establishes Manhattan as the product of an unformulated movement, 'Manhattanism', whose true program was so outrageous that in order for it to be realized, it could never be openly declared. 'Delirious in New York' is the retroactive manifesto of Manhattan's architectural enterprise; it untangles the theories, tactics and dissimulations that allowed New York's architects to establish the desires of Manhattan's collective unconscious as realities in the Grid. It proves above all, that Manhattan has been, from the beginning, devoted to the most rational, efficient and utilitarian pursuit of the irrational. In this vision Coney Island becomes an embryonic Manhattan, testbed of a Technology of the Fantastic, the Skyscraper a self-contained universe, Manhattan a man-made archipelago of architectural islands, Rockefeller Center the first and last fragment of a definitive Manhattan. The decline of this movement sets in with the European Modernist Blitzkrieg unleashed by Le Corbusier in the mid-thirties. An appendix presents a series of projects that announce the 'second coming' of Manhattanism, this time as an explicit doctrine that can claim its place among contemporary urbanisms. Designed and built in only 15 months, the restructuring of the former Arsenale at La Maddalena in Sardinia,  was initiated with the purpose of hosting the 2009 G8 Summit, the scope of work included reclaiming and rebuilding an abandoned and contaminated site of 155 thousand square meters.  The convention centre is composed series of business and recreational buildings that transformed the area into one of the major nautical hubs of the western Mediterranean. An entirely new port was completed with infrastructure for sailing, tourism, and nautical training. This book presents this extraordinary feat, narrating the collective endeavors of the architects, engineers, developers, technicians, contractors, government officials and the over 1,600 workers that worked round the clock to complete a project dedicated to the rebirth and economic development.

S,M,L,XL presents a selection of the remarkable visionary design work produced by the Dutch firm Office for Metropolitan Architecture (O.M.A.) and its acclaimed founder, Rem Koolhaas, in its first twenty years, along with a variety of insightful, often poetic writings. The inventive collaboration between Koolhaas and designer Bruce Mau is a graphic overture that weaves together architectural projects, photos and sketches, diary excerpts, personal travelogues, fairy tales, and fables, as well as critical essays on contemporary architecture and society. The book's title is also its framework: projects and essays are arranged according to scale. While Small and Medium address issues ranging from the domestic to the public, Large focuses on what Koolhaas calls "the architecture of Bigness." Extra-Large features projects at the urban scale, along with the important essay "What Ever Happened to Urbanism?" and other studies of the contemporary city. Running throughout the book is a "dictionary" of an adventurous new Koolhaasian language -- definitions, commentaries, and quotes from hundreds of literary, cultural, artistic, and architectural sources.

Every year the Serpentine Gallery, located in the heart of Hyde Park in central London, invites an internationally renowned architect or designer to design a temporary pavilion in their grounds for the summer. In 2006, a 24-Hour Interview Marathon event took place in the Pavilion designed by architect Rem Koolhaas. It featured over 60 world-renowned artists, architects, writers, designers and theorists, among them David Adjaye, Damien Hirst, Gilbert and George, Hussein Chalayan and Doris Lessing, as well as the Director of the Serpentine Gallery, Julia Peyton-Jones. The interviews were hosted by the architect of the Pavilion, Rem Koolhaas, and the Serpentine Gallery s Co-director of Exhibitions and Programmes, Hans Ulrich Obrist. Small and with a soft-cover in the format of a traditional flip-book , the book is a lively representation of the now legendary 24-hour marathon of interviews, held with some of the greatest names in international contemporary culture. A highly visual and energetic book for its small size, it features over 150 colour and black and white illustrations and photographs interspersed with text extracts from the interviews, and moves along in chronological order of the 24 hours. Koolhaas is one of the latest additions to an illustrious list of architects which include Zaha Hadid (2000), Daniel Libeskind (2001),Oscar Niemeyer (2003), Álvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto de Moura with Cecil Balmond(2005), and Olafur Eliasson (2007).
