Joseph Beuys selected the drawings which make up The Secret Block for a Secret Person in Ireland from his prolific output between 1936 and 1976. For anyone seeking to understand Beuys and his art, these images are the most concise overall introduction to the enigmatic and pioneering work of this most influential of German postwar artists. Last shown in this country in 1974 at the Museum of Modern Art in Oxford, all 456 drawings which now comprise The Secret Block for a Secret Person in Ireland are shown together in the Royal Academy's 1999 exhibition. Illustrated throughout in full colour, this book contains thought-provoking essays by Norman Rosenthal and the renowned Beuys expert Heiner Bastian, a chronology of Beuys's life, and the complete, illustrated text of a historic speech given by Beuys at the opening of his exhibition 'Drawings 1946-1971' in the Haus Lange Museum, Krefeld, on 19 May 1974.

This volume is published to accompany a major European retrospective of the work of Andy Warhol, presenting him as the most significant chronicler of the second half of the 20th century. The collection of over 220 images show how his work reflected and commented on themes in American society that were also becoming international: consumerism, mass-production, celebrity, death and disaster. In the four essays Warhol scholars propose new ways of approaching the art of this enigmatic figure. Heiner Bastian, drawing on his friendship with Warhol, traces his development from commercial graphic artist to purely autonomous artist with international status. He extends the concept of Classic Modernism to almost the end of the 20th century and shows Warhol to be a deeply moral artist. Kirk Varnedoe examines the significance of Warhol's first exhibition of 1962 of the series of "Campbells Soup Cans", exploring the themes of the multiple. Donna De Salvo takes the concept of the "afterimage" in Warhol's work as a starting point for considering his painterly strategy. She shows how Warhol had a very subtle awareness of the surface in contemporary culture, tracing this back to his work for advertising agencies. Peter-Claus Schuster makes a resonant comparison between the work of Warhol and Goya, both depicted atrocity. Warhol's " Death and Disaster" sequences can be seen not as depictions of a callous, unjust society, but rather as a critique of the media message and the resulting desensitization of public consciousness. Ultimately, however, he warns against any simplistic reductions and poposes Andy Warhol to be a complex mixture of victim, superstar and redeemer.

Benutzeroberflache translates roughly as "graphical user interface," and in making it the title of this series, the German painter Eberhard Havekost (born in 1967) addresses directly the technical details of a style that German critics have called "Fotoshoprealismus." Havekost's work, which has been seen at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis and London's Saatchi Gallery, processes motifs from his own photographs that have been computer-manipulated in serial variations. While, in the artist's own words, Havekost "makes a pretense of capturing things as they pass by," his closely cropped compositions distance and fictionalize their subjects. Each painting seems slightly out of focus and distorted, as in his nomadic motifs shot from passing cars, including tents, mobile homes, boxcars or junked vehicles. Gray shading gives his works a subdued, smeared and slightly flat look. In referring to the changes in our habits of perception caused by mobility and media, he suggests that it is no longer possible to portray reality.

Cy Twombly's oeuvre featuring paintings, sculptures, works on paper and photographs displays a highly personal, literary character, but has undergone several profound transformations. The most decisive was the contact with Mediterranean culture caused by Twombly's with drawal from the New York art scene he moved to Italy in 1957. Greek gods, the Mediterranean light, Western history, literature and mythology all found their way into his art.
