On a snowy Christmas Eve in 1956, Mr. Page sits alone in his London flat and begins his memoirs in an attempt to elucidate the events that have changed his life. Spanning decades, he takes the reader through Turkish bath steam rooms and Mayfair dining rooms, from the seemingly ordinary world of his existence to the haunting, unsettling world of wealth and glamour inhabited by Mr. Clive. As Mr. Page puzzles through the contradictions of Mr. Clive's world, the novel pieces itself together, revisiting and rewriting itself as it goes, revealing more upon each retelling. Evocative and mesmerizing, The House on Brooke Street is both a confession of triumphant deceit and an elegy in honor of a lost love.

This novel takes place almost entirely in a backstreet homosexual bar frequented by a motley collection of world-weary regulars. The bar is presided over by the owner, Madame, who looks after her boys, ensuring that the haven remains inviolate. Then one day an innocent young man walks in.

Exhausted, unshaven and wearing evening dress, Jean Genet's gangsters never let go of their machine-guns - not even when they dance together. Their conversations contain some of Genet's finest dialogue; an insane mixture of melodramatic speech-making and low-camp bickering, all wrapped up in a sexy pastiche of forties American film noir, lurching stylishly from tough realism into wicked black humour. Splendid's, a two-act police thriller written in 1948, was never staged in Genet's lifetime. In 1952 he announced that he had destroyed the manuscript and the play was assumed lost. Only in 1993 did a surviving copy reappear. Translated by writer, performer and director Neil Bartlett, this volume also contains a full introduction by Genet's biographer, Edmund White.
