Miracle of the Rose was Jean Genet's second novel, composed in 1943 while the author was incarcerated in La Sante prison, and eventually published in 1946. The work itself is informed by Genet's memories of confinement, both in 'adult' prisons and the Mettray reformatory where he spent three years from the age of 15. However, as in his earlier Our Lady of the Flowers, Genet's imagination transfigures lived experience and makes for a vivid fictional world governed by the poetic force of his fantasies. The central figure in the novel is Harcamone, whom Genet first encountered at Mettray and who resurfaces, unsurprisingly, in the adult prison of Fontevrault - now a murderer, and, in the world-turned-upside-down of Genet's vision, a quasi-divine figure. Genet further explores the path of his own sexuality through accounts of his physical relations with fellow inmates, including the burglar Bulkean and his ex-Mettray lover, Divers.

Translated by Bernard Frechtman and with an introduction by Jean-Paul Sartre, Our Lady of the Flowers was written in a French prison on brown paper from which the convicts were supposed to make paper bags. Its eventual publication by Gallimard put Jean Genet immediately into the front rank of those French writers who expressed their genius through their understanding of the human condition at its lowest. Our Lady of the Flowers himself is a 16-year-old murderer who has fulfilled his destiny by strangling an old man. In the world of Our Lady, of pimps, thieves, prostitutes, queens and blackmailers, morality in the common sense of the word has no meaning. Genet's fantasies from a prison cell, crystallizing round the handsome forms of his criminal heroes, shows his strength as a moralist in making these casebook outlaws into beings of significance to an outwardly ordered society.

The Screens is the last of Genet's plays to be performed during his lifetime. Its subject is the Algerian War of Independence, and it is an intricately crafted, grandiose construction - beguiling and baffling in equal measure.  While the most openly political of Genet's plays, the work is not revolutionary in intent. Rather, as the play progresses the radical direction of lighting and the use of folding canvases serve to segment and compartmentalise the drama, and in so doing they transform the extremities of war into a series of incantatory scenes, vital and ritualistic, that bring stability to an otherwise unbearable reality.  Haunting, savage and grotesque, The Screens is none the less an emotionally invigorating work that demonstrates redemption through abjection.
