<p>Gathering work from Aldrich's sixty-year career, this volume showcases a poet who excelled in both lyric and narrative verse. X.J. Kennedy has called him "a major poet, commanding in his mastery." Aldrich's poems from the 1960s and '70s are still fresh. From the start, his voice was authoritative, lively, and unpretentious. His language is sensual and thoughtful. His later poetry continues to deepen his engagement with themes such as the meaning of time and our responsibility toward the past. This "collected poems" reprints the detective narrative WADES'S WAIT in full, and generous selections from other books, including Aldrich's slight reordering of the long lyrical sequence THE RING ROAD. It also prints three long poems for the first time: FLACKER IN PARIS, TIVOLI, and OWED TO FINNEGANS WAKE. The final section, "New and Selected Poems," draws mainly from his last books and unpublished late poems. They reveal a poet engaged in the lives of family and friends, generally hopeful, but reflecting sometimes ironically on the fragility of our "man-made" world.</p>
