Philip Baruth's short story collection exhibits many of the strengths that have characterized his work over twenty years in the novel form. In humorous ways, Baruth’s stories explore familiar aspects of our infectious media culture. The smaller scale of the works brings into higher relief the psychological dynamics that drive his characters. His protagonists are ordinary people caught in dangerous predicaments partly of their own making who are also carried along by the powerful current of broader cultural forces. By wishful and evidentiary means, they revisit the past, hoping to correct or erase the most fateful elements. In Baruth’s novel The X President (Bantam 2003), about the aftermath of Bill Clinton’s presidency, the device of time-travel magically enables the reshaping of history, and the mission of the main characters remains largely external to their own lives. The characters in the present stories are more deeply implicated in the errors of the past: they may carry the most hazardous materials inside them. In the title story, the hazard is a virus that works like a time bomb, delivering horror from an idyllic source. In “Anthony Buys Pornography,” it is a lingering token of unseemly desire; and in “Peaheart” and “Nancy &amp; Tanya &amp; the Long Hard Rain,” it’s a personal secret—a weakness at the core of the character. These stories confront the consequences of human weakness while still allowing the characters their full humanity and a chance at redemption.

Indiana Noble Sad Man of the Year is Steve Henn’s third book of verse. As in his previous volumes, Henn does hand-to-hand combat with the absurdity of daily life, including our experiences with the pervasive media—Facebook, cell phones, Internet ads, movies, self-promotion, and dreams. These new poems are born of the same live performance energy that produced his first two books. Henn dedicates this book to his four children, whose drawings and paintings serve effectively as illustrations. The book might earn a PG rating if poetry publications were voluntarily policed by, say, the Academy of American Poets. It tells a father’s story in a form that a child may begin to comprehend, but it speaks even more powerfully to adults. Every confession, every raw dream, nudges us toward recognition—not asking us to acknowledge our collusion, but inviting us to empathize. Henn’s poems are at once critical and confessional, often using dramatic irony to turn the critical spotlight on the speaker. Still, he resists the compulsion to blame. The poems lead to laughter and release, and in this sense they are the expression of patience, with himself and with other people. Like Charles Bukowski or Allen Ginsberg, Henn broadens and deepens our feelings, opening the way to a humane existence in an absurd world.

Leah Peska Kabel was born in Aussig, Czechoslovakia, in 1933, the year that Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of the German Reich and began the swift consolidation of power over most of Europe. Leah’s immediate family went into hiding during World War II at a remote farm owned by a cousin. After the war, surviving family members made their way to the American zone of occupation and, in time, to the United States, originally in New Jersey. Decades later, in her eighties, and still carrying the burdens of that dark past, she turned to her father’s careful notes and her mother’s memories, along with her own, to write her memoir about how they survived those harrowing years.

Jeff Horwat's wordless graphic narrative immerses readers in a surreal world of labyrinthine perplexities. Driven by personal anguish, the protagonist (whom the author has named Charlie) explores a disorienting checker-board terrain that is strewn with bones even as vines and flowers burst through the cracks. Charlie encounters a series of beings and objects-birds, a broken teacup, flower pots, a tree-that speak symbolically to his existential emptiness. On his path to recovery, he is misled, attacked, and left in awe by various wind-up animals who complicate his search for answers.As Horwat describes in the afterword, NOTHING IS A CURE reflects his experiences and struggles. In the midst of intense anxiety, Horwat turned to art-making to explore his own existential crisis. Informed by Buddhist meditation techniques and the psychological insights of Jacques Lacan, he began to see how the objects from his memories might resonate symbolically. Images that he had created as stand-alone revelations from his recovery process began to coalesce into a dynamic symbolic world. The resulting ink wash paintings would eventually be exhibited in a gallery. Although the black-and-white images were not originally intended to form a linear narrative, once they were on the gallery walls, Horwat noticed connections between them and was inspired to fill in the gaps to create a story.Horwat achieves a vision that is at once poignantly idiosyncratic and widely appealing, a story about the discovery of inner solace within the emptiness of experience. Through the protagonist's encounters with symbolic objects, NOTHING IS A CURE presents the paradoxical realization that the acceptance of loss can open us to a vast otherness that fills us with life and wonder.
