<p>LERMONTOV'S LEGACY - a worthy successor to Vassar Smith's 1992 collection Pushkin, plus - offers many poetic gems from the Golden & Silver Ages of Russian literature. Smith's EN FACE English translations preserve the form & music as well as the meaning of the Russian originals. More particularly, this collection captures the beauty & power of Mikhail Lermontov, whom many consider second only to Alexander Pushkin among Russian poets. Here, concrete examples of Lermontov's immense influence on subsequent distinguished poets are shown, particularly in Nekrasov's & Sologub's satirical limitations of Lermontov's "Cossack Lullaby." The contents also underscore other derivative forces in literature. Several short lyrics, one by Lermontov, the other by Pushkin, are themselves verse translations (respectively from German & Czech). One may question the inclusion of Maxim Gorky among the stellar poetic talents. However, Gorky displays satirical genius in "The Smertyashkin Poems," his incisive lampoon of Fedor Sologub. Also to the collection's credit are especially fine pieces (& translations!) of Fedor Tiutchev, Zinaida Hippius, & Alexander Blok.</p>
