Melanie Fleurie is a woman of forty, a successful author who tries to write an autobiography so that she can reach a deeper understanding of her personal and sexual identity. The project fails, and instead she writes a letter to her ninety-year-old grandmother, Charlotte, setting down the stories of four generations of women. At the core of Marion Bloem's work are the difficulties facing second-generation Dutch-Indonesians: children who were born in The Netherlands, but who are sufficiently Indonesian to be barred from "belonging" to either country. They feel most drawn to Indonesia, but the realities of that country conflict with the nostalgic tales their older relatives tell about the East Indies. The magical and mysterious fabric of Indonesian culture, as seen from a Western point of view, is drawn tautly over the historical turmoil Indonesia experienced during the Dutch colonial period, the Japanese Occupation and afterwards.

Wayfarer: New Fiction by Korean Women

Born in 1960 in Beijing and now living in Norway, the Chinese poet and short-story writer He Dong writes of childhood in desperate times. In these six tender and chilling tales, He Dong describes a generation that grew up during the Cultural Revolution, under the rule of their "sun," Chairman Mao. The children in these stories are both innocents and accomplices. In "Nine," He Dong tells of a little girl who faces hard times after the parents are sent away for reeducation. In "Just a Game," she writes of a neighborhood obsession with "Storm the Fortress," a children's game that reflects the mass hysteria of the adults around them and leads to death. And in "We Love Children Mao," a girl forms an uneasy bond with a boy classmate who has been reeducated, but is not completely beyond suspicion. Written with unsentimental and poetic directness, this is fiction that expands our sense of history and breaks our hearts. He Dong came to Norway as a post-graduate student in biology and now makes her home there. She now holds a research position at the University of Oslo and runs her own acupuncture clinic. A poet and translator, this is her first collection of fiction Translator Katherine Hanson is the editor of An Everyday Story and the co-translator of two novels by Amalie Skram.
