South Africa has an archaeological wealth that stretches back over two million years of human pre-history. Part of that wealth is the hard evidence of the people themselves in the form of human skeletal remains. Also present in large numbers are the skeletal remains of the Holocene ancestors of the living human populations of southern Africa. The emphasis of scholarly research in this field has shifted substantially since the 1920s and 1930s when the finds were first made and documented, through the typological classifications of the 1940s which focused largely on the racial classification of specimens. Recent studies focus more narrowly on specific situations in place and time and attempt to draw together biological, archaeological and behavioural data to form a picture of the lifestyles and health of past populations. The common need of recent research has been for detailed documentation of the archaeological context and precise dating of the skeletons. Before he died in Britain in 1977, H.M. Basner, lawyer, Communist Party member, politician and, briefly, Native Representative in the South African Senate, had written a substantial part of his autobiography. His writings covered the period from his birth in Latvia to South Africa, the United States, back to South Africa, and on to pre-independence Tanzania and post-independence Ghana. On his death, his widow Miriam used this record as the basis of her account of his life. The result is an eccentric and anecdotal portrayal of one of South Africa's more colourful political characters. The social and political issues of the period between 1927 and 1946 are treated in depth and the book offers insights into the personalities of many of the political figures of the time. In particular it is a source of information relating to the election of the first Native Representatives to the House of Assembly and the Senate.

This collection of six plays by one of South Africa's leading playwright/actors features works written between 1984 and 1993. The work of David Lewis-Williams, as it has been developed through the Rock Art Unit at the University of the Witwatersrand, has been seminal in providing a paradigm which places the problems of the interpretation of South African rock art in an entirely new light. This volume brings together the work of a number of scholars in the field of rock art studies who engage the so-called "trance hypothesis" in terms of their own empirical data and theoretical interests. The consensus is that the hypothesis is basically correct, but questions are raised about points of detail and the applicability of the hypothesis to all paintings and engravings. Many of the chapters engage in wider issues that impinge on other disciplines, such as linguistics and folklore studies, and demonstrate the relationship between them and the art. The editors give an overview of the development of rock art studies which aims to provide a contribution to the epistomological problems of this type of research, showing how the approach has been modified in the light of criticisms and new insights.
