Spark-ignition engines and compression-ignition diesel engines have been almost unchallenged as power units for road vehicles for the last century. However, the air pollution problems which they cause, and their poor efficiency in today's typical operating conditions, make it essential that alternatives to these engines are fully explored. Many have been proposed, but few have been exploited commercially. This book discusses the technologies that presently exist for alternative engines. For each alternative engine that is considered, the operating principle is discussed, together with the primary advantages and disadvantages of the particular technology. The development of each alternative is noted and current manufacturer research and experimental testing is described, together with results where available. The alternative engines and prospects for further development of conventional engines are discussed and compared with reference to fuel economy and exhaust emissions. Cost issues are made generally, with definitive data provided where it exists. This book forms part of a programme of study on the contribution of road transport to global warming and air pollution, and investigating ways of reducing it.

Environmental pollution and related human health concerns have now reached critical levels in many areas of the world. Among the striking spectrum of his ingenious achievements, it is worth emphasizing that Simon Stevin is rightly considered as the father of decimal fractions as they are in use today. Stevin also urged the universal use of decimal fractions along with standardization in coinage, measures and weights. This was a most visionary proposal. Stevin was the first since Archimedes to make a significant new contribution to statics and hydrostatics. He truly was "homo universalis".The impact of Stevin's work has been multilateral and worldwide, including literature (William Shakespeare), science (from Christian Huygens to Richard Feynman), Politics (Thomas Jefferson) and many other fields. Thomas Jefferson, together with Alexander Hamilton and Robert Morris, advocated introducing the decimal monetary unit in the USA with reference to the book "De Thiende" by S. Stevin and in particular to the English translation of the book: "Disme: The Art of Tenths" by Robert Norton. In accordance with the title of this translation, the name of the first silver coin issued in the USA in 1792 was "disme" (since 1837 the spelling changed to ("dime"). It was considered as a symbol of national independence of the USA.

Is the concept of sustainability strongly founded on solid scientific bases? And can this elusive concept be introduced in the economic framework and embodied in people's behavior as well as public and private institutions' decision making? This book presents a view of sustainability that starts from the acknowledgment of physical conditions and limits that humans can no longer neglect. It also includes some epistemological foundations of the concept of sustainability and historical backgrounds. The view is optimistic to the extent that economics, the compass of our industrial society, is open to inputs and suggestions coming from outside orthodox schemes. Transdisciplinary science is one key element of such a change, and this book is a transdisciplinary project. In the field of criticism of GDP as an omni-comprehensive instrument, the book also describes the methodology of the Index of Sustainable Economic Welfare (ISEW), proposed by H. Daly and John Cobb in 1989. They proposed some revisions to the System of National Accounts and GDP in order to add sustainability information for policy makers. Starting with consumption, some adjustments are proposed to allow for inequality of income distribution, environmental problems (such as pollution costs, long-term environmental damage, and depletion of non-renewable resources) and social issues (such as commuting costs, urbanization costs, and public expenditure for health and education). Computations for different nations have shown that ISEW increases together with increasing GDP up to a point, beyond which it stagnates or even decreases, due to the environmental and social pressure of economic growth. The ISEW is a feasible calculation and some experiments at the local level in Italy are presented. Advances in integrating different sustainability indicators (both economic-based and physical-based) are also presented as well as their use under a sustainability viewpoint.
