This work features the recollections of Benjamin Harris who fought in the British Army's campaign against Napoleon in Spain and Portugal. Harris joined the army in 1802 and later joined the 95th Rifles, a regiment which became the elite of the Army through their expertise with the rifle, their alertness, discipline and regimental pride. The story unfolds from the moment that the diminutive Harris lands in Portugal and marches away in the sun, weighed down by his kit and great coat, his blanket and camp kettle, his haversack rifle, ammunition, ship-biscuit and beef and all the tools and leather that he had to carry as the battalion's cobbler.

It examines the probabilities that Adlestrop Park, the Parsonage House and Stoneleigh Abbey inspired not only fictional places such as Thornton Lacey and Sotherton in Mansfield Park but also how the Leighs' colourful lives and inheritance problems influenced many of the plot lines in Jane Austen's books. Jane Austen & Adlestrop is also a portrayal of an archetypal English village's journey from the eighteenth century, looking at how it experienced radical changes during Jane Austen's lifetime and how it is now, over two hundred years later.

It describes the type of weapons used, the military tactics, and explains the fact that King Billy's army was made up mostly of mercenaries from Denmark, Holland and Finland, while King James's army had French and German as well as Irish troops. Thomas Morris was a cockney lad of 17 when he enlisted in the 2nd Battalion of the 73rd Regiment in 1813 which was about to sail for Swedish Pomerania. Morris describes here the actions of the ensuing campaign, the fortifications of Stralsund, the victory of Gohrde, and engagements with the French in the Netherlands. During Napoleon's first abdication the 73rd were quartered in Belgium, after his return from Elba, and fought at Waterloo. Morris gives an account of the fighting of British Infantry Squares there, in which he himself took part. Promoted to NCO he formed part of the British occupation army in Paris. His story is full of anecdotes about his fellow soldiers, his officers and the circumstances in which he found himself.
