Among the first partners of Bay Area architect Garrett Eckbo was Robert Royston, a landscape architect who received the American Society of Landscape Architects' highest medal in the 1980s at the peak of his career. This monograph celebrates Royston's influential suburban parks. With their clean, geometric designs, water features, crisply defined areas, whimsical play elements and brilliantly chosen plant material. The architect's advanced exploration of the landscape form made the parks remarkably insightful in their understanding of sociology, play and the postwar suburban landscape. Royston's parks had an immediately recognizable rhythm and style born of Japanese and Scandinavian influences and Royston's own aesthetic as a native Californian.

The first part of the book surveys the area's architectural history, dating from California's beginnings to the present. Brief entries on each landmark include summary descriptions of the project, information on the architect, date of construction, and address. Many entries include color photos, some small and some up to a full page in size. The flexible binding allows the book to lay flat when open, and a placemarker ribbon sewn into the binding is icing on the cake. The readership for the book includes architects, students, visitors to the area, and general readers interested in modern architecture. A fascinating book for followers of both architecture and photography: the first publication of a project that involved two giants of American arts, photographer Aaron Siskind and architect Louis Sullivan, called the father of modernism, and the creator of the skyscraper. In 1952, while Siskind was teaching at Chicago s Institute of Design, he and his advanced photography students undertook a comprehensive photographic survey of Sullivan s architecture, eventually shooting over 60 buildings. From hundreds of photographs, Siskind composed an exhibit of 126 photographs of 35 buildings by Sullivan, who died in 1924. Siskind's exhibit was a documentation of Sullivan s architecture unlike any other - and one that could never be repeated, because so many of Sullivan s buildings were demolished shortly thereafter. More than 50 years later, the photographs are still fresh: Sullivan's buildings are arrested in their decline, their darkened ornament luminous in Siskind's incomparable compositions. In April 1906 the San Francisco Bay Area fell victim to a powerful earthquake, and in October 1909 the city hosted a "regional rebirth" with a celebration named the Portola Festival. The photographs and illustrations reproduced here - some only rarely shown or seen now for the first time - have been given a close reading and placed within the specific historical context by the authors. The result is a journey back into the early history of the twentieth century and its first great urban catastrophe.
