Wages in rural areas lag behind those near cities, and life has become one of constant adjustment to the larger economic picture. Commuterism, although not a desirable state of affairs, allows a community to retain an energetic work force and to be in a position to capitalize on the return of a more localized economy. Many rural people choose to commute, even though a move to a place closer to work is an available option. ln these cases, people openly admit that family and Friends are the reason that they remain in their home towns. A strong self-sufficiency movement, involving barter, resale and repair, has developed in the countryside, mostly as a result of a need to decrease dependence upon cash. As industries themselves decentralize to the suburbs/exurbs, this may well create a second force in favor of the Rural Renaissance, even without the presence of overall growth or prosperity.
