<p>The Kentucky Feminist Writers Series is dedicated to showcasing the writing of Kentucky feminists and thereby fostering a sense of community among the many strong women and talented writers in this state. In the first volume, Writing Who We Are: Poems by Kentucky Feminists, we drew together poets different in every aspect of their lives but one--their authentic voice. By this we mean the courage to share their lives honestly and the talent to move us to new understandings of each other. Telling Stories: Fiction by Kentucky Feminists brings a new group of feminist writers (and a few returning ones) together. From a high school junior to a prize-winning, best-selling author, they depict characters moving beyond old versions of themselves. To live and write without blinders is to face this process of change squarely. It is to write from the "inside out"--to disregard the "shoulds." A woman must rid herself of the "angel in the house," said Virginia Woolf; she must destroy the voice that tells her to be nice, to say only pleasant things.</p>
