<p>Illustrated with many reproductions of Rodin's sculptures and drawings, this book comprises a profound education in art, for it distills the knowledge and experience of the artist universally regarded as the greatest sculptor since Michelangelo. After a series of fascinating reflections on the difference between literary and artistic methods, the final chapter "On the Usefulness of the Artist" is a marvelous unfolding of the joy implicit in the search for truth. Richard Howard (b. 1929), makes a revealing assessment of Rodin in his introductory essay. A Pulitzer-Prize winning poet (1970), critic and translator, Richard Howard holds a unique place in contemporary American letters. Howard is credited with introducing modern French fiction to the American public.</p>
