All twenty-seven papers in this collection share a concern to promote a 'holistic' ecological approach to farming. They survey a range of ecoagricultural topics: soil management, integrated pest management, farming systems, institutional supports and barriers, all with specific reference to Eastern and Southern Africa. The papers reflect some of the variety of indigenous knowledge, current research and training efforts that will contribute to agricultural renewal in Eastern and Southern Africa. The volume is one of five of the output of the Environmental Capacity Enhancement Project - a four year project involving participants from thirteen African countries.

This is a rare achievement: translation of contemporary francophone African literature into English, and published within Africa, with the aim of promoting greater understanding and links across the continent. The impetus came from the focus on francophone Africa at the Zimbabwe International Book Fair 2001. Supported by the French Embassy, three lecturers at the University of Zimbabwe, assisted by nineteen students, undertook the translations of three short stories. The writers are Seydi Sow from Senegal, Florent Couao-Zotti from Benin, and Abdourahman Ali Waberi from Djibouti. Couao-Zotti's story 'Small Hells on Street Corners', was shortlisted for the Caine Prize for African Writing, 2002.

An in-depth, accessible study of the function of 'lobola' - the bride price - in seven Southern African countries in which it is a widespread tradition and its practice is still common. The study considers this social institution in both matrilineal and patrilineal societies to show that almost without expection, the practice of paying the bride price results in the wife become the property not only of her husband but also of his extended family. It discusses how this impacts negatively on her reproductive rights - she becomes a child-rearing machine, has little control over family planning or her sexual health - and therefore on the health and development of the whole society. It argues that the institution of 'lobola', which is weakening in some circles but still widely condoned under the guise of the preservation of tradition, is incompatible with a basic standard of human/personal rights for women; calls for its abolition; and for governments to take a stronger lead in formulating laws that better protect women's marital and reproductive rights.

The history of Zimbabwe has always been reflected in its oral and written literature. Much of the serious fiction written in the 1980s and early 1990s focused on the effects of Zimbabwe's war of liberation. Little has yet been written about post-independence Zimbabwe and the complex and challenging issues that have arisen in the last twenty years. This anthology of twenty-two short stories provides a representative sample of the range and quality of writing in Zimbabwe at the turn of the century, and an impressionistic reflection of the years since independence in 1980. Included are stories by established writers Shimmer Chinodya, Charles Mungoshi, Brian Chikwava; and some younger or less established writers, , Clement Chihota, Wonder Guchu, Chiedza Musengezi, Mary Ndlovu, Vivienne Ndlovu and Stanley Nyamfukudza. The collection also reflects a slightly broader perspective with stories by Alexandra Fuller, Derek Huggins, Pat Brickhill and Chris Wilson, who engage with historical memory of the conflicts out of which Zimbabwe arose, and the lessons to be drawn from living within a culture other than one's own. Overall, the anthology reaffirms the persistent value attached to imaginative writing in Zimbabwe, and illustrates that the country's literary tradition is alive and well, and reshaping itself for new times.
