Soile Yli-Mäyry is a Finnish artist with an impressive international c.v. Immensely energetic, she has had more than 250 exhibitions worldwide. Her work reflects this energy. Made with the palette-knife, it is physically bold, one might almost say impatient, in its handling of the artist's material. Finland had a tradition of mythic and symbolist painting.

Beginning in 1985, Wickiser's paintings of the stream begin to evolve into a purer form of abstraction.  This marked a radical departure from the stream as he had painted it from 1975 to 1985.  From 1985 until his death in 1998 the stream continued to be a source of inspiration and synthesis of representation and abstraction. The hardcover edition includes 128 pages, with 104 illustrations including 62 plates in full color.  The book includes an introduction by David Adams Cleveland, an illustrative history by Ralph Wickiser, as well as essays by Gerrit Henry, Lilly Wei and Judd Tully.

<p>Charles Schucker's work was widely exhibited in his own lifetime in prestigious contexts. In addition to one man shows at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and the Katonah Museum, he was included in group exhibitions in a large number of major American institutions: the Metropolitan Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Walker Art Center, in Minnesota. He was a well known and fully integrated member of the American art community, living first in Chicago, then from 1946 onwards in New York, where he taught at New York University, and then at the Pratt Institute. In 1990, Carter Ratcliff, an art critic for Art in America and Parkett, wrote, "Like his friend Morris Louis, Schucker broke free of traditional ways of making a painting. He began to pour the paint over the canvas, often in wide swirling currents. With the energy of those currents, his art broke free of Europe."</p>
