I consider Garrett Hardin to be one of the most important thinkers of the 20th century. Generally, however, people still fail to understand the import of what he is saying. They assume that he is merely calling attention to problems that arise from the use of common resources. Various critics mistakenly assume that he advocates the brutal consequences caused by scarcity and overpopulation, that he supports the right of the wealthy nations to maintain a privileged way of life, that he champions private property and capitalism, that he lacks concern for human rights and freedoms, that human survival is the goal of moral life, or that Hitler-type coercion is a moral necessity. In their own unique ways, critics overlook the revolutionary character of Hardin's work both for the nature of ethics and for the method by which ethical claims are justified.

The quantized energy levels of a particle in a box are derived by means of a simple assumption about the relation of the de Broglie waves to the walls of the box. No attempt is made to solve the Schrödinger wave equation for other systems, but the wave functions of hydrogen-like electrons are presented  and discussed in some detail, and the quantum states for other systems are also covered. Statistical mechanics is introduced before thermodynamics, and the discussion of thermodynamics is based on it. This arrangement reflects the author's belief that beginning students can understand statistical mechanics better than chemical thermodynamics.Aimed at first-year college students who plan to major in chemistry or closely related fields, the book is written in a logical, clear, and understandable style. In addition, many excellent figures are included, along with numerous problems and 75 pages of appendices covering such topics as symmetry of molecules and crystals, hybrid bond orbitals, and magnetic properties of substances.

Excerpt from Foreword: "Until quite recently attempts to answer the question of how life originated were thought to be irresponsible speculations and not worthy of serious scientists. Now the situation has largely changed. It is generally accepted today that the development of the first forms of life on Earth was not a solitary "happy" event but an event whose repetition was an integral part of the general development of matter- and thus an event that lends itself to serious scientific investigations. Methods have recently been developed that make a possible objective study of the different periods in the long history of the evolution of organic matter, as well as the study of the subsequent formation of multimolecular forms- on cosmic objects such as planetesimals and particles of gas and dust. After the Earth had formed, and its lithosphere, atmosphere, and hydrosphere had developed, the monomeric and polymeric matter became more complex. Then the first forms of life evolved, and the elaboration of their structures and metabolism continued. The question of how life originated can thus be answered only through the joint efforts of scientists of various specialties- astronomers, geologists, physicists, chemists, and biologists.
