The little book by Epictetus called Enchiridion or “manual” has played a disproportionately large role in the rise of modern attitudes and modern philosophy. As soon as it had been translated into the vernacular languages, it became a bestseller among independent intellectuals, among anti-Christian thinkers, and among philosophers of a subjective cast. Montaigne had a copy of the Enchiridion among his books. Pascal violently rejected the megalomaniac pride of the Stoic philosopher. Frederick the Great carried the book with him on all campaigns. It was a source of inspiration and encouragement to Anthony, Earl of Shaftesbury, in the serious illness which ended only in his death; many pages of his diaries contain passages copied from the Enchiridion. It has been studied and widely quoted by Scottish philosophers like Francis Hutcheson, Adam Smith, and Adam Ferguson who valued Stoic moral philosophy for its reconciliation of social dependency and personal independence.

EPICTETUS

Meditations is a series of personal writings by Marcus Aurelius, Roman Emperor 161–180 CE, setting forth his ideas on Stoic philosophy. Marcus Aurelius wrote the 12 books of the Meditations in Koine Greek as a source for his own guidance and self-improvement. It is possible that large portions of the work were written at Sirmium, where he spent much time planning military campaigns from 170 to 180. Some of it was written while he was positioned at Aquincum on campaign in Pannonia, because internal notes tell us that the second book was written when he was campaigning against the Quadi on the river Granova (modern-day Hron) and the third book was written at Carnuntum. It is not clear that he ever intended the writings to be published, so the title Meditations is but one of several commonly assigned to the collection. These writings take the form of quotations varying in length from one sentence to long paragraphs.

This edition of Seneca's Epistles unites all 124 of the letters in a single volume, complete with thorough explanatory notes, an appendix, and an index of the names referred to in the text. The entirety of this compendium was penned by Seneca during his retirement and sent to his friend Lucilius Junior, a procurator of Sicily. At this late stage of life, Seneca held great experience in matters of both philosophy and governance, having served under the Emperor Nero for fifteen years. Despite the conversational tone present in many of Seneca's epistles, it isn't entirely clear whether Seneca actually corresponded with Lucilius. It is possible that Seneca simply wished to write a fictional correspondence so as to experiment with the form, possibly recreating how he might wisely explain certain ideas or concepts to individuals. It is in his Epistles that Seneca demonstrates his philosophical clout: topics range from how to behave virtuously, how to approach death, how to consider drunkenness, how philosophy is practical and relevant to living, and how travel can be a salve to the trials of everyday living. The opinions of Seneca are generally supported by examples, logical argument, or rooted in his long experiences of life and learning. Seneca's letters are valuable for shedding light on a variety of disciplines as they were in classical antiquity. The jargon surrounding medicine, law, and navigation at sea show a culture where professions had developed greatly. The social aspect of Roman life, how people recreated, and what things were held in high regard are also much discussed, while prominent figures such as Publilius Syrus are quoted by Seneca in support of his points or topics. The quotation: Vita sine litteris mors - 'Life without learning [is] death' - is derived from the 82nd epistle, and remains the motto for several educational institutions around the world.

Letters from a Stoic

Originally, these sayings and conversations were penned during the Warring States period of Chinese antiquity. The subjects range from wise behaviour in times of crisis to general instruction upon how to live a peaceful life characterised by serenity, humility and good work. The importance of family life and community cooperation are also alluded to, offering an insight into the mores and customs of ancient Chinese life. The politics of the time, rife with infighting between noble families and dukedoms, also attract consideration by Confucius and his contemporaries. To better illustrate his points, examples and analogies are readily offered by Confucius, who engages with several other philosophers through the course of the twenty named books that comprise the core text of the Analects. The translator of this book is James Legge, a Scottish Sinologist who spent much of his lifetime in China translating the philosophical and artistic classics. Devoting his talents to accurately rendering Confucian thought for Western consideration, Legge's translations of the Chinese Classics were originally published by Oxford University Press, and remain revered and appreciated to this day.

Writing so as to echo the much esteemed Cato the Elder, the beauty and profundity of the words in this essay are significant. The clear and plain yet highly eloquent words elaborate on aging and the concerns that arrive with it. The text has been much quoted, and for centuries after its publication in Ancient Rome it was used in Latin tutelage. Cicero was among the most lauded of Roman officials to have ever lived. His writings are in themselves an authoritative historical source both of Roman civic life and thinking on a variety of subjects and events, with his treatises exemplifying the clarity with which he wrote.
