<p>Semiconductor lasers are an integral part of high-speed telecommunications. The push for higher modulation frequencies, thereby allowing greater data rates, has motivated the scientific community for several decades. However, as the field matured, the maximum speed of traditional directly-modulated lasers has reached a fundamental limit. Recently, optical injection locking has been proven to enhance the bandwidth and resonance frequency of directly-modulated semiconductor lasers. The injection locking technique allows the lasers to exceed their fundamental modulation speed limit, allowing for greater communication speeds. This book first develops theoretical insight into the nature of resonance frequency and bandwidth enhancement by optical injection locking. The design parameters of resonance frequency enhancement are described and these results are generalized to oscillators of all kinds. High-speed resonance frequencies well over 100 GHz and 3-dB modulation bandwidths in excess of 50 GHz are fundamentally possible. Various types of modulation formats are implemented as well. High-Speed Modulation of Semiconductor Lasers by Optical Injection Locking: From Basics to Modern Advances

Momentum investment strategy which buys past intermediate-term winner stocks and sells past intermediate-term loser stocks generates positive profits over three-month to one-year holding periods. This price anomaly has attracted a lot of attention since it is inconsistent with the traditional Market-Efficiency Hypothesis. This book uses an extensive international data set first to detect the existence of international momentum effect, then to investigate the sources of momentum profits. With a sample of about 20,000 stocks from 18 developed countries during 1973-2001, we find that an internationally diversified momentum strategy earns significant positive profits over intermediate horizons. On the sources of momentum profits, our findings suggest that momentum phenomenon is linked to information dissemination mechanism among investors, which is consistent with the prediction of existing behavioral theories. Our results also indicate that investing style is not an independent source of momentum. The analysis should be useful for academicians who are interested in testing market efficiency hypothesis, and may also serve as a reference for investment professionals.

This book introduces an analytic procedure that estimates the amount of traffic congestion (vehicle hours of delay) that is caused by different types of accidents that occur on urban freeways, as well as a model for prediction of real-time accident information such as how long an accident will affect traffic congestion and to the extent of the traffic congestion. The first part describes a method to separate the non-recurrent delay from any recurrent delay that is present on the road at the time and place of a reported accident, in order to estimate the contribution of non-recurrent delay caused by the specific accident. Since a number of estimated delay results were censored by time and/or space boundary conditions, an approach based on survival analysis was applied to analyze estimated delay and to predict traffic congestion impact in terms of time and space. Additionally, this book presents three prediction models regarding the spatio-temporal impact caused by a traffic accident as well as an accident duration model based on AFT metric model.

<p>Gender is central to the organization and functioning of Guatemalan society. In many Guatemalan communities, men work within the public and political domain while indigenous women's participation in rural highland commu-nities is usually identified in the context of community development. Spanish-language illiteracy, family power relations, and a machismo culture have limited or EXCLUDED the public and political participation of women. At the extreme, Guatemalan women are targeted for murder and mutilation in rural and urban areas -- a phenomenon called femicide/feminicide -- simply for being women 'out of place'. In the mainly rural department of Huehue-tenango, something else is going on. The organization Asociacion de Desarrollo Integral de las Mujeres Huehuetecas (ADIMH) is working towards the INCLUSION of women into the public domain for the betterment of their communities through literacy, education, health, and production projects. In this book, we document the struggles and successes of Huehuetenango women, Huehuetecas, as they work towards community rebuilding after the 36-year internal armed conflict. Based upon our observations we agree with the participants that women's empowerment, as a form of community development, is integral for the future of their communities.</p>

Presently some on-line vibration monitoring methods was used as an in-flight diagnostic and trend monitoring device. But very little work has been accomplished on the detection and quantification of combined gear damages and bearing faults in a bearing-rotor-gear transmission system.Vibrations caused by the combined damages in gears and bearing usually can not be identified readily without special procedure applied to the vibration signature. In this thesis, under a variety operating cases, vibration signature due to the combined damage between the outer race of bearing and the teeth of gear were examined in both time and frequency domains for identification purposes. Joint time-frequency analysis such as the Wigner-Ville Distribution (WVD) was used in detecting and identifying various types of gear and bearing damage. The modified Poincare Maps based on chaotic vibration were also successfully applied in analyzing the vibration from gear and bearing damages. The objective of this work is to develop an on-line Health Monitoring system to detect faults in gear and bearing. Considerable success has been achieved in this work to identify faults in both bearing and gear components.
