MULTITUDES examines the work of multi-award winning international design practice, HASSELL. Founded in Australia in 1938, HASSELL has grown to become one of the world’s largest design firms, with offices in China, Singapore, Thailand, the United Kingdom and Australia. Released to mark the practice’s 75th anniversary, MULTITUDES unpacks the collaborative, multidisciplinary design approach that has seen the practice thrive in the turbulent, increasingly globalised conditions of the 21st century city. The book features contributions from leading design practitioners and commentators, including Elizabeth Farrelly, author and regular Sydney Morning Herald columnist, John Worthington, founder of international planning and architecture firm DEGW, and Professor Sue Anne Ware, of RMIT University, amongst others. Showcased projects include much of HASSELL’s recent urban works in Asia’s burgeoning mega-cities, as well as its signature public buildings, such as the Adelaide Festival Centre (1980), the Sydney Olympic Park railway station (1998), The National Institute of Dramatic Art, Sydney (2002), and many more. Multitudes: Hassell, 1938-2013

In his essay within Mongrel Rapture, the first monograph on the polarising work of Australian architectural practice Ashton Raggatt McDougall (ARM), Charles Jencks identifies ARM as one of a handful of architectural practices internationally that operate in a mold he describes as ‘Radical Post Modernism’. Eschewing notions of good taste and formal purity, ARM opts instead for an ‘architecture of ideas’. Drawing from diverse sources that range across everything from Le Corbusier to Robert Venturi, computer programming to biblical verse, ARM’s architecture has been alternately celebrated and execrated by critics and the public alike. Despite ARM’s radicalism and the attention it garners, however, the practice has also produced some of the most important public buildings in Australia, including the National Museum of Australia, Canberra (2001), Melbourne Recital Centre and MTC Theatre (2008), and the Perth Arena (2013). Mongrel Rapture combines extensive photography and plans of all of ARM’s major buildings with essays from a range of highly regarded critics, including Jencks, Mark C Taylor, Leon van Schaik, Harriet Edquist and others. Part scrapbook, part critical exegesis, like the architecture it documents Mongrel Rapture is both confronting and thought-provoking: a vital publication for anyone with an interest in this practice and Australian architecture’s very particular strain of ‘Radical Post Modernism’.

Episodic Urbanism is a book about the transformation of two city blocks in the heart of Melbourne, Australia. It tells the story of how Peter Elliott Architecture + Urban Design has worked,over the course of nearly two decades, to turn RMIT University’s inner city premises from what was essentially a private fortress into a public-spirited urban campus. Touching on everything from Renaissance Italian townscapes to masterworks of 20th century city-making by the likes of Carlo Scarpa, Luis Barragán and Jože Plečnik, Episodic Urbanism illuminates the unique conceptual framework underpinning the success of RMIT’s rejuvenation. As the book demonstrates, this framework sits in stark contrast to typical master planning exercises that work to impose a single, homogenous vision. Instead, it privileges subtle, incremental change that is respectful of existing conditions and their history – which in RMIT’s case stretches right back to the foundation of the Melbourne. Presented in a visually rich, tactile format developed by graphic artist Stuart Geddes, Episodic Urbanism features contributions from several leading thinkers on urbanism and the city, including Leon van Schaik, William L Fox, Sue Anne Ware and Robert Nelson. As an exploration of both urban and institutional renewal, it tells a story about how we might effect dramatic transformation within our cities, without the dramatic rupture commonly associated with “renewal”.
