This volume of the series Halicarnassian Studies presents a number of contributions concerning ongoing and recent research on tombs and deathscapes, including the publication of an Imperial, late-antique necropolis outside the Myndos Gate in ancient Halikarnassos. Four articles concern the publication of the 22 monumental tombs and their mosaics, the surveying and drawing of the necropolis, and the inscriptions that belonged to the tombs. In relation to these follows a linguistic analysis of two local funerary terms. Other articles shed further light on aspects of death and burial in Halikarnassos-one through a recently excavated intramural necropolis, the other through some preliminary observations on sarcophagi. Included are chapters on discoveries made on the site that housed the most famous Karian tomb monument, the Mausoleum. One essay scrutinizes a funerary epigram from Halikarnassos mentioning a family that moved from Thurii to Halikarnassos, while two articles concentrate on necropoleis outside Halikarnassos. These include a first preliminary report on Cukurbuk, a prehistoric necropolis on the Halikarnassos peninsula, and the deathscapes of Loryma on the Bozburun peninsula in the Karian Chersones. <p>The Kongemose culture has for many years lived in the shadow of the more well-known ErtebÃ?Â?Ã?Â¸lle and the Maglemose cultures. This is not, in any way, due to any inferiority on the part of the Kongemose culture, compared to the other two. But it is, to a very great extent, a consequence of the lack of publication of the relatively rich archaeological record that has emerged over the years. It is my hope to be able, by way of this book, to make a contribution to disseminating knowledge about the Kongemose culture to a much wider audience than the restricted group of archaeologists, primarily from Southern Scandinavia, who normally work with this period. <p><div>The fornaldarsogur Norourlanda (literally "ancient sagas of the northern lands," but often referred to in English as "mythical-heroic" or "legendary" sagas) are a group of some 35 Icelandic prose narratives relating the exploits of kings and heroes of late iron-age and early Viking-age Scandinavia--before the unification of Norway under Haraldr harfagri and the settlement of Iceland in the late ninth century, and hence before the dawn of "reliable" historical writing. In their present form, the fornaldarsogur are generally presumed to date from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries and thus represent one of the younger, "post-classical" genres of saga literature, but most have at least some basis in significantly older tradition. Although many, with their stock characters and fondness for the fabulous, have been dismissed as historically unreliable and of scant artistic merit, their great and lasting popularity is attested by the very large number of manuscripts in which they are preserved--over a thousand in all, the earliest from the beginning of the fourteenth century, the latest from the beginning of the twentieth. Most were also recast in verse, either as rímur, lengthy poems in complex metres, or in ballad form, and they have also served as sources of inspiration for writers as diverse as Adam Oehlenschlager and J.R.R. Tolkien. The essays in the present volume emanate from the research project "Stories for all time: The Icelandic fornaldarsogur," based at the University of Copenhagen, the principal aim of which was to survey the entire transmission history of the fornaldarsogur. In keeping with the focus of the project, the essays presented here deal with various aspects of the transmission and reception of the fornaldarsogur, from their earliest manifestations until the present day.<br /></div></p>

<p>The Arab Gulf states (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and UAE) have over the past decades moved from near obscurity to prominence among actors in the global economy. This rise of the Gulf was facilitated by plentiful income from oil and gas and by the gradual process by which the economic centre of the world is shifting eastward. But first and foremost it has been a result of conscious policies conceived and implemented by the Gulf states to catch up with the developed world and not least to place their countries on a developmental trajectory which will secure the populations a sustainable livelihood in the future. This book recognises the significant developmental results achieved in the Gulf states over the past half of a century but focuses on the detrimental and disrupting effects created by the economic anomaly of sudden and massive influx of oil revenues. Effects such as the growth of rentier mentality, the crowding out of productive activities, the resulting lack of economic diversification. The oil-based development model worked well when the populations were small and the income from oil plentiful. With rapidly increasing populations and rising popular demands on the governments, this model can no longer adequately support these societies. The book investigates various elements of how the governments in the Gulf region tackle the difficult and often painful transition toward an ordinary type of economy, where wealth in society is a created by the skills and hard work of its population. Issues such as economic diversification, societal planning, institutional change, social reforms, educational achievements, demographic growth, job creation and the significant reliance on migrant labour are investigated.</p>

<p><div>The theme of community has perhaps never been of a more vital significance than in our present day and age. The process we refer to as modernity has been synonymous with the gradual fragmentation and disintegration of traditional communities on various levels of our societies. Today, we might be facing the culmination of this process. The spectres of nationalism are undermining various national and international communities. Inequality is on the rise. If people unite it is too often in the mistrust and sometimes hatred of other people. Hans Christian Andersen lived at a time when this process was at its early stages, and he was acutely aware of its potential perils. Alongside the transformations of traditional communities, other communities seem to appear. A recurring element in these culturally specific communities is literature, and Hans Christian Andersen is a key figure here, as his literary and cultural legacy has a magnetic effect on people around the globe. A vivid example of this effect was the conference Hans Christian Andersen and Community. The conference was held at the University of Southern Denmark in 2017 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Hans Christian Andersen's status as honourary citizen in Odense. This book presents a selection of 19 contributions to the conference. In various ways, each chapter activates the concept of community in relation to Andersen as an author and as a citizen of the world he lived in--as well as the cultural icon which he has become.<br /></div></p>

Exploring Fictionality: Conceptions, Test Cases, Discussions (University of Southern Denmark Studies i)

<p><div>What happens when an old cultural institution is subjected to marketization and individualization? How does the institution do justice to the inner core of its traditions, whilst at the same time keeping up with the demands of its individual users, as<br /> <br /> well as the marketization requirements coming from the state and society in general? How do these responses affect the way that the institution contributes to the generation of social capital? Taking the Danish Folk Church as their core example, researchers representing different academic disciplines analyze these questions in 17 chapters. The choice to use the Folk Church as the main case for evaluating how old institutions respond is in itself provocative and challenging. The book therefore opens with a discussion of why the Folk Church provides an example of a cultural institution worthy of being analyzed in this way. The four main parts of the book elaborate on relevant parts of the history of the Folk Church; the nature of marketization; of individualization; and of social capital as related to the Folk Church. The book concludes with a discussion of the effects of marketization and individualization on cultural institutions like the Folk Church. Cultural institutions must ask themselves what happens to What Money Can't Buy in their response to marketization and individualization.</div></p>
