Robert and Jane Aberson left their home in the Netherlands to respond to the Canadian government's 1920s advertising campaign for settlers from Europe to homestead and populate the vast prairie provinces. After purchasing their farm in 1928, their first crop failed; the following year world markets collapsed, the Great Depression began, and many farmers abandoned their farms and moved to the cities. Only the stubborn and frugal stayed on the land, the Abersons among them. Bob Aberson credited his wife with their survival during those difficult years.

In 1926, certain documents were presented to the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland by Major A.F. Dobbs. These had been collected by Arthur Dobbs, author and statesman, who in addition to displaying varied interests, and no small influence, in colonial affairs during the eighteenth century--he was Governor of North Carolina from 1754 until his death in 1765--distinguished himself as a critic of the administration of the Hudson's Bay Company.

This is an anthology of English verse from the Middle Ages to recent times, from both sides of the Atlantic. Special emphasis has been given to poetry by writers of the Great Plains region (both Canadian and American) and by Aboriginal poets. Intended for introductory classes, poems have been selected with an eye to works--not necessarily easy ones--which address experiences and ideas more readily available to beginning university students and which are more direct and straightforward in expression than many currently anthologized.

The Mounted Police and Prairie Society 1873-1919 is a collection of scholarly explorations of the nature and role of the Mounties on the Prairies, from the formation of the North West Mounted Police in 1873/74 to its transformation into the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 1919/20. Given the status of the Mounties as a Canadian icon, and given the conflicting and changing evaluations of their actions and policies, the historical examination of the force is of considerable importance.

In the spring of 1885, the names Theresa Delaney and Theresa Gowanlock captured the attention and imagination not only of Canadian, but also of American and overseas readers. After their husbands were killed by Plains Cree, the two women were among eighty hostages held for two months. During their captivity, horrendous rumours circulated as to the indignities they were suffering; Delaney and Gowanlock emerged from their ordeal safely, however, to declare that none of the rumours were true, that they had been treated well under the circumstances, and that they had been zealously protected by several Metis families. This was not the central message advanced in the published account, however, which was released five months later. In Two Months in the Camp of Big Bear, the accounts of the women were made to conform to the literary conventions of the Indian captivity narrative, capitalizing upon existing sets of images, symbols, and representations. A complicated story was simplified, heroes and villains were created, and this imaginative narrative became part of the formidable written and visual legacy of the events of 1885 that is narrow and one-sided.
