Ella Deloria could speak intimately about Indian ways because she belonged to a Yankton Sioux family. A distinguished scholar who studied with Franz Boas at Columbia University, she had the gift of language and the understanding necessary to bridge races. Originally published in 1944, this book is an important source of information about Dakota culture and a classic in its elegant clarity of insight. Beginning with a general discussion of American Indian origins, language families, and culture areas, Deloria then focuses on her own people, the Dakotas, and the intricate kinship system that governed all aspects of their life. She writes, “Exacting and unrelenting obedience to kinship demands made the Dakotas a most kind, unselfish people, always acutely aware of those about them and innately courteous.”Deloria goes on to show the painful transition to reservations and how the holdover of the kinship system worked against Indians trying to follow white notions of progress and success. The autobiography of Lloyd Roosevelt Moses (1935-2000), a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe who served with great distinction as an officer in the U.S. Army in World War II and the Korean War, retiring as a major general in 1964. Called into active duty from the Army Reserve in 1940, Moses trained soldiers in Missouri and Alabama until 1945 when he was sent to Europe to serve with the 507th Parachute Regiment. He worked on the European theater staff and was included in the airborne assault over the Rhine. At the end of World War II, he became post commander at Sendai, Japan.Moses was once more in combat while commanding the 31st Infantry Regiment during the Korean War (1950-1953). He served again in Japan from 1953-1954 and then returned to the United States to serve at Fort Leavenworth and Fort Dix. After retirement, Moses served as the director of Institute of Indian Studies (the current Institute for American Indian Studies) at the University of South Dakota from 1967-1974. He was instrumental in developing Indian related Courses at USD and overhauling the direction and purpose of the Institute. Moses was active with the South Dakota State and the Clay County Historical Societies.

To Have This Land is a better read than the title suggests. The book is about the local politics prevailing in Dakota Territory in 1889 that created the conditions for an Indian massacre. The book also tells about ranchers living along the western edge of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation who organized into the Dakota Militia. During the month preceding massacre at Wounded Knee, this essentially leaderless group had nearly daily skirmishes with young warriors from the hostile camp on Stronghold Table.
