<p>The anguish, frustration, and desperate experimentation which characterized German society in the wake of its bitter defeat in World War I and during the ensuing revolution are nowhere more apparent than in the graphic posters, prints, and book and periodical illustrations produced by the German Expressionist artists who, between 1918 and 1922, joined the effort to reshape society. In a scholarly and sympathetic study enhanced by over 100 illustrations, art historian Ida Rigby analyzes these artists' attempts to integrate art into the movement for social reform, and their eventual disillusioned withdrawal into realism. Although such well known artists as Kàuathe Kollwitz, George Grosz, and Otto Dix are given full consideration, an important feature of this book is the attention it pays to the minor figures who, many argue, were the most characteristic representatives of the Expressionist movement. "SDSU Press's edition of Carlos Gagini's novel "El árbol enfermo" (here translated as "Redemptions") is a classic novel of Costa Rica, first published in 1918. This is the first English translation, and one of the few Central American novels available in English. Set in and around San José during the first years of the twentieth century, when the influence of the United States-economic, political, military, and cultural-was intensifying rapidly, "Redemptions" tells the story of the seduction and betrayal of a young Costa Rican woman (and symbolically of her country and region) by a North American entrepreneur. In the same genre as novels and essays by Uruguayan José Enrique Rodó and Mexican José Vasconcellos, "Redemptions" is a work of cultural nationalism which urges Costa Ricans to value their autonomy, to resist the encroachment of outside forces led by the ubiquitous, for the region, "Uncle Sam," and to recognize and solve their own problems. Originally published in 1985, it appears now in a second printing trade paperback from the original publisher San Diego State University Press with the original translation and introduction by E. Bradford Burns, and a new afterword by the Costa Rican contemporary novelist and literature professor Daniel Quirós. From the introduction by Dr. Daniel Quirós: "El árbol enfermo is, in fact, considered one of the very first anti-imperialist novels-the first being (maybe) El problema, by Guatemalan author Máximo Soto Hall. The center of this discussion is the "conquering" of Margarita by Mr. Ward, symbolic of Costa Rica being bullied and seduced by U.S. intervention and foreign capital. Examples of this symbolism are abundant in the novel and have already been discussed extensively in the introduction. Suffice it to say that at some point Gagini even chooses to name the chapter in which Mr. Ward finally confesses his love to Margarita at a lavish Fourth of July party as "Yankee Expansion.""

Photography began almost 150 years ago with the nearly simultaneous invention of two types of photographic processes, the daguerreotype and the Talbotype or calotype. On January 7, 1839, Louis Daguerre announced his discovery of a way to reproduce images on coated copper plate. Shortly thereafter, on January 31, William Talbot explained how shadows of objects could be chemically recorded on salted paper sensitized with silver nitrate. With the advent of photography, the people, architecture, and natural beauty of Chester County, Pennsylvania, made worthy subject matter for many professional and amateur photographers. Photographers in Chester County, many of whom were also skilled artisans and craftsmen, were fortunate in that they lived near Philadelphia, a center of photographic activity. The first photographers in the county were itinerant tradesmen who traveled from place to place, taking photographs, portraits mainly, for a fee. Later, as photography developed and became more widely known, many photographers opened their own studios. Reflected Light: A Century of Photography in Chester County offers an overview of the development of the photographic medium and traces the progress of photography by examining the work of ten Chester County photographers. In the text by Pamela Powell and in striking photographs of the county and its people, the story of photography in its earliest years is deftly told.
