Located in Charleston along the Ashley River, Middleton Place is an eighteenth-century plantation that has survived revolution, Civil War, and earthquake to become a well-preserved museum and a National Historic Landmark. It was the home of four important generations of Middletons, beginning with Henry Middleton, president of the First Continental Congress; Arthur, a signer of the Declaration of Independence; Henry, Governor of South Carolina and an American Minister to Russia; and Williams, a signer of the Ordinance of Secession.
In 2005 the Middleton Place Foundation opened its permanent exhibit, Beyond the Fields: Slavery at Middleton Place. Representing more than three decades of research by staff and volunteers, the exhibit tells the story of Africans and African Americans associated with the Middleton family and their plantations. 
The eponymous companion volume to this exhibit vividly illustrates the realities of plantation slavery at Middleton Place through insightful text by authors Barbara Doyle, Mary Edna Sullivan, and Tracey Todd, and through more than eighty color and black-and-white images. The book, like its parent exhibit, commemorates and documents the lives, families, and contributions of some seven generations of Middleton slaves. By identifying more than 2,800 individuals owned by the Middleton family from 1738 to 1865 and by connecting many of them with their extended family units, Beyond the Fields solidifies their story in a tangible historical context. This pioneering work on the part of the Middleton Place Foundation makes it possible to present the once overlooked history of these slaves and freedmen from the early eighteenth century through emancipation and into the twentieth century.

In the twenty-five years since The Kentucky Painter from the Frontier Era to the Great War opened at the University of Kentucky Art Museum, interest in the topic has steadily increased. This volume is a survey of the major painters of note, organized by chronological and thematic topics. Readers will recognize some of the familiar names here, especially Matthew Harris Jouett and Paul Sawyier. But they may be surprised by the work of little-known but accomplished artists whose work merits serious consideration as part of the astonishingly vibrant artistic tradition in Kentucky. 
For a place of fairly recent frontier origins, a small populace, and extremely disparate regions, the Commonwealth has certainly had--and continues to have--its fair share of proficient artists. The artists presented here were not "regional" painters working in isolation. Many were quite well trained. Both Joseph Henry Bush and Oliver Frazer studied with Thomas Sully in Philadelphia. Paul Plaschke studied with George Luks. Dixie Selden, a student of Frank Duveneck's, also pursued study in the atelier of William Merritt Chase in New York, as did Sawyier. Several other artists studied abroad, including Duveneck, who received instruction in Munich, and William Edward West, who continued his studies at the academy in Florence, Italy, after his work with Sully. Carl Christian Brenner was born and raised in Germany and attended the Munich Royal Academy of Art, but he was also influenced by the Hudson River School of landscape painters. Hattie Hutchcraft Hill journeyed from Paris, Kentucky, to Paris, France, to study at the renowned Academie Julian. This book celebrates their achievements even as it seeks to nurture an ongoing interest in Kentucky's art history.

The Palmetto Portraits Project is a collaboration between the Medical University of South Carolina, the Hasley Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston, and the South Carolina State Museum intended to reflect the full range and diversity of South Carolina citizens at work and play in the lowcountry, piedmont, and the upstate. The portraits include close-ups and wide shots of ordinary people living in South Carolina. Military personnel from Fort Jackson, Parris Island, and Charleston Air Force Base are photographed. Factory workers at the BMW Manufacturing Plant are featured as well as firefighters, children, church attendees, and shop merchants on Charleston's King Street. From historical reenactors to a roller derby girl, these photographs highlight the range of individuals who make up everyday life in South Carolina. Reminiscent of the Farm Security Administration's photographs of 1930s, the Palmetto Portraits Project is a visual survey of state residents at the end of the first decade of the twenty-first century. Novelist Josephine Humphreys provides a first-person narrative about what it is like to be "from here," and contemplates our shared kinship. Editor Mark Sloan offers insight into the privileged access that portrait photographers have long provided into the lives of their subjects. Each photographer prefaces their work with a brief description of their photographs and their experiences shooting their contributions to this collaborative project. In the afterword Paul E. Matheny III offers an assessment of how these portraits may be viewed by future generations and applauds the photographers for capturing "the soul of the state."

Through the striking color images of more than twenty photographers and text by John Cely, this book shares with readers the beauty and legacy of the Cowasee Basin. Located in central South Carolina along the Congaree, Wateree, and Upper Santee Rivers, the 215,000 acre Cowasee Basin, an acronym for the three rivers that hold it together, features some of the most significant biological, historical, and cultural resources in North America. The heart of the basin is Congaree National Park, the Palmetto State's only national park, a landmark which features extraordinary biological diversity including one of the tallest hardwood forests in the temperate world along with six national champion trees and two dozen state champion trees.The Cowasee Basin is also the home of the beautiful Poinsett State Park, Manchester State Forest, the Congaree Bluffs Heritage Preserve, and the finest flat water paddling destination in South Carolina, Sparkleberry Swamp. The rivers and abundant hills make Cowasee a sportsman's and naturalist's paradise. The region is also steeped in historical significance. It was the scene of the very first exploration of the North American interior when Hernando De Soto and his 600 Spanish conquistadors traveled through the area in the spring of 1540 searching for the legendary Indian town of Cofitachequi. Later the English explorer John Lawson traveled through the "High Hills of the Santee" along the basin's eastern border and provided perhaps the first written description of Cooks Mountain. During the American Revolution, Cowasee was the setting for some of that war's most distinguished leaders, including General Nathanael Greene; Thomas Sumter; Francis Marion, the "Swamp Fox;" William "Danger" Thomson; and "Light-horse" Harry Lee. After the revolution, cotton profits and slavery allowed for the construction of some of the finest antebellum plantation homes ever built in America, four of which still stand: the Borough House, Kensington Mansion, Millford, and Mulberry. The basin is also home to thirty sites on the National Register of Historic Places and one National Historic District, Stateburg. Cowasee Basin includes a preface by Billy Cate, executive director of the Congaree Land Trust, and a foreword by Walter Edgar, South Carolina's leading historian and author of South Carolina: A History.
