Aristotle's analysis of tragedy has traditionally been criticized for being overly terse and frustratingly ambiguous. Recently, however, in the wake of Nietzsche's radical psychology, a more serious charge has been lodged: that Aristotle, like Plato, could not stand to face the irrational view of the universe that is the chief source of the fascination, power, and attraction that tragedy has traditionally exercised over its audience. The philosophy of Plato and Aristotle began as a backlash against the "blasphemous theology," as Ricoeur calls it, which tragedy forces insistently to our attention. While granting a hesitancy in Aristotle in dealing with this crucial issue, this study locates the reason for this reluctance not in a failure of nerve before the tragic vision, but rather in the embarrassment Aristotle felt at the failure of his system to measure up to his program of explanation. Once this embarrassment is removed (as in an expansion of the canons of divine perfection), surprising resources can be discovered within Aristotle's works to account for the utility of the tragic experience in allowing the individual to move, philosophically, toward a nontragic worldview. From this perspective, philosophy would build upon and become an extension of tragedy rather than being a compulsive backlash against it. Reciprocally, tragedy would not remain excluded as a scandal to the philosophic worldview, but would be eagerly enlisted by philosophy as an unexpected and useful stimulant for prodding the individual to the highest levels of intellectual attainment.Important chapters in this work also discuss comedy and tragedy in general terms, by no means strictly tied to Aristotle but claiming very broad applicability. The author draws substantially on an examination and testing of Aristotle's metaphysical outlook in relation to the phenomenon of tragedy. This suggests that frankly facing the tragic outlook of the human situation may be an emotional impetus and may provide imagistic resources to enable us to achieve a contemplative understanding of the human condition as not ultimately tragic--a conclusion that can ony be validated as "knowledge" insofar as it had dialectically confronted its most serious challenge, namely, the tragic vision. Thus, this book is directed to modern (post-Nietzschean) ways of thinking, which insist that the tragic vision alone is the truth of the human condition and that the audience's ability to properly appreciate tragedy depends upon its willingness to accept its "blasphemous theology" as our ultimate truth.This work is lucid, arresting, and accessible in style, completely free of the jargon of any school, and its thesis is highly relevant to many areas of contemporary thought. This book should make a useful contribution to a variety of courses in literature and philosophy.

Coalseam: Poems from the Anthracite Region brings together thirteen voices to honor the rich heritage of the anthracite coal region of northeastern Pennsylvania. All of the poets collected here have lived in the anthracite area for significant parts of their lives. Several, such as W. S. Merwin and Jay Parini, spent their childhoods in Scranton but left the region for schools and jobs elsewhere and did not return; others, like Thomas K. Blomain and Vincent Balitas, still reside in their native communities. What these poets share is the deep effect that the lives and land of northeastern Pennsylvania has had on them. Working obliquely or directly, they all explore the central metaphor of mining - its language and landscape - as the locus and method of creative expression. Represented in this collection are a variety of forms, ranging from the lyric to the long narrative to experimental forms. Its themes reflect a multiplicity of concerns and experiences. The texture of family life and ethnic heritage, the confluence of cultures, the brutality and danger miners experience each day, the scars on souls and environment are all present here. Coalseam is redolent with the language of mining, factual information that provides a texture and context, and a lively, dramatic sense of the history of a region reaching back thousands of years - long before the first group of immigrant miners arrived. Written primarily with Christians in mind, this book attempts to provide a comprehensive interpretation of the classic I Ching (Book of Change) in the postmodern world and a creative reflection on the Christian faith based on various ideas evoked by "change." Embracing change as the essence of existence is difficult for us because we have held the view that change is an attribute of being. According to the I Ching, being is conditioned by process, which is again conditioned by change. Thus, change as the ultimate reality has been the most fundamental assumption that nurtures the patterns of thought and values in East Asian civilization. Today's postmodern phenomena such as plurality, absurdity, and relativity are due to change. Jung Young Lee thus holds that the text of the I Ching must be interpreted by postmodern categories. Because this book primarily addresses those in the Christian tradition, it has special purposes: a comprehensive interpretation of change in postmodernity and an enrichment of the Christian faith. Here, Lee says that the I Ching - unlike an ordinary text - helps us not only to learn about the reality of change in ourselves and in the world but to reflect on something that will concern us ultimately. For Christians, our ultimate concern is the Christian faith. Thus, a spontaneous and unmediated reflection on the Christian faith comes from the evocation of "change." For this reason, Embracing Change is more than a comparative study between the I Ching and Christianity or more than dialogue between them because it is intended for mutual enrichments. For a comprehensive interpretation of change, this book begins with questions people usually ask about the I Ching. Instead of entering into a critique of "what the text is," however, Lee concentrates on what the text and its tradition try to tell us about change. An important chapter in this book deals with the philosophy of change - because the I Ching is simply the book or classic about I or "change," which is the ultimate reality. Change operates through a complementary dualism of yin and yang, a binary movement of growth and decay or expansion and contraction. Lee discusses the symbolizations of change, providing illustrations of broken-unbroken lines, duograms, trigrams, and hexagrams. Divination - because it needs proper background knowledge of change to produce any reliable result - and the postmodern characteristics of change as they relate to contemporary developments in the West (such as quantum physics) are treated toward the end. But perhaps the most valuable reference for the study of the I Ching is the fresh translation of the main text, which appears at the end of this volume. The translation attempts to clarify many ambiguous passages found in other translations.

The material in this book has a long and interesting history. It all began back in 1964 when Fr. John J. Quinn, S.J., moderator of the new University of Scranton literary journal called Esprit, learned that Flannery O'Connor, the American essayist and short story writer, had died after a lingering illness. Since he was enthusiastic about her and her work, he hit upon the idea of dedicating an issue of Esprit in her memory. So he set about contacting a large number of distinguished American literary figures and soliciting from them a tribute to Flannery. He received a large number of replies, some brief, some extended, but all respectful and illuminating of her work. Among those represented were Brother Antoninus, Saul Bellow, Cleanth Brooks, Walter Burghardt, Harold Gardiner, Thomas Merton, Walker Percy, Eudora Welty, Katherine Ann Porter and Robert Penn Warren. In the years following its publication, there was a constant and heavy demand for copies of this issue of Esprit until the run was exhausted. So in 1994, the 30th anniversary of her death, Fr. Quinn, now Professor Emeritus in the English Department, decided that the time was appropriate to reissue this tribute to Flannery O'Connor. The present volume, then, is basically a reprint of the material contained in that original issue modified only by some light editing and the addition of some recent essays at the end.
