Crisis and Reform is a groundbreaking study that traces the Church history that led to the Union of Brest (1596), in which a majority of Ruthenian eparchies accepted the primacy of the Pope in Rome while retaining their Slavonic-Byzantine rite. Dr. Gudziak concentrates specifically on the significance of the Kievan metropolitanate and its struggle both with the Moscow metropolitanate and with the encroachment of Polish Roman-Catholicism and Protestantism on Ruthenian spiritual life. He also shows how these tensions, coupled with the aftermath of the visit to Muscovy (1588-1589) of Patriarch Jeremiah of Constantinople, led to the decision of the Ruthenian hierarchy to move toward union with Rome. 
 Crisis and Reform provides an excellent overview of the ecclesiastical structures in Eastern Slavic lands from their Christianization to the late sixteenth century. The book also contains maps and reproductions of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century illustrations of leading Church figures, polemicists, and sites important to the Union.

In this reinterpretation of the Soviet Bolsheviks policies toward the peasantry in the pre-World War II period, Andrea Graziosi posits war as the most effective paradigm for understanding the struggle between the peasantry and the Soviet authorities, and shows how this struggle was one of the most important factors in the formation of Soviet rule in Russia, Ukraine, and the other republics of the USSR. His conclusions are startling and will necessitate a re-evaluation of the formative years of the Soviet Union.

Timothy Snyder presents the often overlooked life and thought of Kazimierz Kelles-Krauz, an important Polish intellectual at the beginning of this century, and thereby opens a new path in the understanding of modern nationalism and twentieth-century socialism. During his brief life in Poland, Paris, and Vienna, Kelles-Krauz influenced or infuriated most of the leaders of the various socialist movements of Central Europe and France. His central ideas ultimately were not accepted by the socialist mainstream at the time of his death. However, ninety years later, we see that his theories anticipated late twentieth-century thought on the importance of nationalism as a social force and the parameters of socialism in political theory and praxis. Kelles-Krauz was one of the only theoreticians of his age to advocate Jewish and Ukrainian national rights as being equivalent to, for example, Polish national rights, and he correctly foresaw the struggle for national sovereignty as being central to future events in Europe.

A Prayer for the Government: Ukrainians and Jews in Revolutionary Times, 1917-1920 (Harvard Series in Ukrainian Studies)

After the fall of the Russian Empire, Jewish and Ukrainian activists worked to overcome previous mutual antagonism by creating a Ministry of Jewish Affairs within the new Ukrainian state and taking other measures to satisfy the national aspirations of Jews and other non-Ukrainians. This bold experiment ended in terrible failure as anarchic violence swept the countryside amidst civil war and foreign intervention. Pogromist attacks resulted in the worst massacres of Jews in Europe in almost three hundred years. Some 40 percent of these pogroms were perpetrated by troops ostensibly loyal to the very government that was simultaneously extending unprecedented civil rights to the Jewish population. 
 Abramson explores this paradox and sheds new light on the relationship between the various Ukrainian governments and the communal violence, focusing especially on the role of Symon Petliura, the Ukrainian leader later assassinated by a Jew claiming revenge for the pogroms. A Prayer for the Government treats a crucial period of Ukrainian and Jewish history, and is also a case study of ethnic violence in emerging political entities.

Regional diversity such as Ukraine's often embodies potential for friction and conflict, in particular when it involves territorialized ethnicity and divergent historical experiences. Political elites interested in stability and conflict prevention must find ways either to accommodate or control this diversity. In the early to mid-1990s, the Western media, policymakers, and academics alike warned that Crimea was a potential center of unrest in the aftermath of the Soviet Union's dissolution. However, large-scale conflict in Crimea did not materialize, and Kyiv has managed to integrate the peninsula into the new Ukrainian polity. This book explores the factors that led to the largely peaceful transition and places the situation in the larger context of conflict-prevention studies, explaining this critical case in which conflict did not erupt despite a structural predisposition to ethnic, regional, and even international enmity.
