Poetry. In NOW WE ARE FRIENDS, Robert Fitterman takes on some of the prime features of our intensively-networked present—the broad, continual scatter of personal information through blogs, databases, and social networking sites; and its (frequently uncomfortable) return as the stray filaments find their way back to us and "that me" trumps "me me" in other social contexts. NOW WE ARE FRIENDS blows these effects up to archival proportions, replacing the momentary slip (that terrible drunken photo) with raw scale by pulling together all findable traces of an identity online or the adventures of a name: "Ben Kessler," circa 9/2010. Poetry. From the author's note: "This work began when I was asked to write an essay on beauty. I felt I had nothing to say about beauty so I decided on something procedural: I would go to 'beautiful' places with audio recording equipment, transcribe the excursions, and see what emerged. After my first outings, it became clear that on these trips a great deal of time was spent consulting maps and otherwise orienting oneself—and the language of that was not only interesting but often funny. It had that quality of Perec's work that I love, his capacity for capturing those things that are so obvious and ubiquitous that we don't notice them. I thought surely this language must be happening all the time. So I decided to keep doing it until I had 99 pages. In DEMOCRACY IS NOT FOR THE PEOPLE, Josef Kaplan takes up extreme forms of political speech and other "heterogeneous" discourses of the present to address the culture of advanced capitalism in the voice of its own transcendent violence. Assassination threats, the farewell letters of political suicides by self-immolation, pulp science fiction, journalistic accounts of Palestinian bombings, origami instructions, bland reports on the controversies surrounding autonomous robotic weapons systems—in DINFTP, these and other unassimilable elements become the sources for a series of errant, self-winding mashups that can neither be rejected outright, because of their powerfully sculpted quality, nor fully absorbed as artistic work.</p>
